Grape-Nuts Trail Mix Crunch Cereal

From Post
Reviewed by Mr Breakfast on 2/7/2006

Original Grape-Nuts is my favorite cereal. I like to let it set in the milk for a minute and get slightly soggy. The texture is unique among cereals - a sort of friendly, crunchy mush. The taste of the original is nutty and wholesome. It's almost like somewhere on a sunny dry field on a mystic farm in the Midwest, you could shake a wonderful Grape-Nuts bush or tree and fill your bowl directly with nuggets from the land.

So, I was very excited to see a new variation of Grape-Nuts: Trail Mix Crunch.

Let's read from the box and we'll both get excited. Ready?

"First, we start with a new nugget. It has a lighter crunch than the regular Grape-Nuts nugget. Then, we add naturally sweet raisins, tasty oat clusters, almonds, fiber sticks, and a touch of honey for just the right amount of sweetness."

Are you excited? You know you are. You love it. Mmmm... crunchy. Sweet... yeah, that's it baby. A touch of honey. Not too hard now. Now... now... give me the fiber stick!

First the negative... the box is deceptive. There are not nearly as many raisins and almond slivers in each spoonful as the box would have you believe. When you take the first bite of the new cereal (with milk), there's a differential in textures that doesn't make immediate sense to your mouth. The raisin is soft (there was one lonely raisin in my first bite). The nuggets are hard. Our mouths are used to raisins with flakes - two textures that are remotely comparable.

Now the positive... as the cereal absorbs more milk, that texture differential dissipates and each spoonful feels more even to the mouth. As for taste, this is a good cereal. The addition of honey gives the new Grape-Nuts more of a "honey graham" flavor. There's no denying the flavor presence of the original cereal (good news to original Grape-Nuts fans), but this is a new taste. When Special K chucks strawberry flavor into their cereal, you get "special K with strawberry flavor", but the addition of new ingredients to Grape-Nuts somehow transforms it into a new entity... a new taste. I could imagine this cereal being sold without the Grape-Nuts association and still being successful... simply as "Trail Mix Crunch Cereal".

One 1/2 cup serving with 1/2 cup of fat-free milk has 220 calories, 0 saturated fats, 0 trans fat, 90% of your daily iron requirement, 0 cholesterol and 5 grams of dietary fiber.

It's a healthy and tasty cereal. I liked it a touch less than the original, but that's a smidgen less than perfection.

Give it a try. You know you want to. You know you want to taste it... just a nibble... mmm... mmmm... that's it baby... sweet enough for you... how about some CRUNCH!... Yeah baby! Crunch it! CRUNCH IT! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cranberry/vanilla is addictive and my wife and I jokingly call it our "cereal crack". I am dismayed to find out that it is discontinued. I thought it was just Giant that stopped carrying it... found out you can buy it through Amazon but it's close to $5/box. Guess it's a small price to pay to feed my addiction.

Found it in a Target in Reading, PA. Maybe it was at a Weis market also. Purchased two boxes just to bring it back to TX.

Prior to Christmas, CVS had it on sale for 2.50 a box. Guess they were trying to get it off their shelves. Why ? It's a great cereal.

I used to buy POST Grape-Nuts Trail Mix Crunch at my Costco store in Toronto and can no longer purchase it. I can't seem to find it anywhere and have called the company that just bought POST to voice my concerns. It seems to be a global issue and not just in Canada. People in the U.S. are also having trouble finding this product. This is the best cereal I have ever tasted and I am on my last bowl. So sad. Please let me know where I can find this product because it is so great.

I think everyone who has commented on this review of trail mix crunch has this one craving that makes them go kuh kuh for it, the mushy or soggy texdture that it gives you but yet crunchy when you taste it. I've never tried to taste this grape-nuts trail mix crunch flavor but I did taste the original grape-nuts and the post trail mix crunch (the different brand); anyways, as I tied the two, I found that these two are something that you cannot resist to crave on. The former having its signature grape flavor which really is not made of grapes and that it's a nugget that fills you up with almost a cup serving while the latter having this aromatic scent of almond and honey with the same crunchiness to that of grape-nuts, I can't think and wonder how would this taste like if they are combined? Surely I might crave twice to that!

I like this cereal a whole lot. In fact I eat it right out the box without milk. It happens to be high in iron and folic acid which are lacking in the typlical american diet unless we eat alot of RED MEAT and oranges. I was amazed to see that in it more nutritious than raw granola. I recommend that cereal companies ban high fructose corn syrup becauce it is the leading cause of sugar diabetes in America. But I like it this cereal a whole lot. - Hilton

I don't know what possessed me. I've been looking at the Grape Nuts Trail Mix cereal for the last few months, and I finally figured I'd give it a try. It surely could not be as awful as I remembered Grape Nuts being when I was a kid. (I think the last time I tried it I was 8 or so. I didn't like cheese or mayonnaise then either. Now I would probably eat a cheese and mayo sandwich.)

Ha, the joke is on me! It is just as horrible as ever.

I made a bowl of oatmeal this morning and then sprinkled a handful of the stuff on top and stirred it in. When I took a bite it was the same old taste from before. To me, it tastes like what being in the grain bin smells like dusty wheat chaff with mouse droppings. Yes, exactly like that. Only now it was in my oatmeal!!

Instead of making a new bowl I thought I could choke it down. I mean, there wasn't that much in there, surely the oatmeal would mask the taste. No, it did not. I was finally down to the last 3 bites and I just started thinking, "This is the most vile concoction I have ever eaten." I had to spit it out before I threw up.

I was hoping they would still have the old version. I'm amazed you like this. I can't finish the box, which i think is pretty bad for cereal. Do you work for Kraft? Is there any positive feedback out there? I thought I liked maple (or whatever that sugarey flavor is) but now I can't even stand the smell of maple. Sad to think Grape Nuts is gone forever. I really think there is room for both. I have to apologize for being negative. I've never commented on a product before, in the positive or negative, and hate to sound like a whiner.
