I"ve been to Jay's several times. I like old school diners so I wanted to give this place a chance. Unfortunately the breakfast is not exceptional. The place is dirty and the food is handled in an unsanitary manner. I've had very good service and some of the worst. The place stinks from cigarettes.

In the dictionary under "Greasy Spoon" there should be a picture of Jay's. Jay's is a 24/7 breakfast joint. Walls are yellowed from a combination of cooking oil, bacon fat, and old cigarette smoke. Newly designated non-smoking section works fine for non-smokers, but after 30 years, those stains on the wall aren't going anywhere.

"Hardening arteries since 1971" :-)

Service and food range from good to awesome, depending on who is working. They tend to cater towards the after-clubbing crowd and early morning breakfast people like delivery folks, etc.

For breakfast, the most popular item on the menu is probably the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs w/ Biscuits. If not the best in Texas, it's definitely in the top 10. If this is your first trip to Jay's, don't mess around, and just get the Chicken Fried Steak. Also, any of their burgers are great, and the dinner salad comes highly recommended, even for breakfast.

Prices are extremely reasonable, but you need to understand that they have a strict NO SUBSTITUTION POLICY. However, if you know what you want, let your waitress know that you'll pay for your extras, and then you can get as creative as you want. Prices are so low that you will still be getting a deal.

One of my personal favorites is the Chili and Cheese Hashbrowns. It's not on the menu, but if you let them ring up the Hash Browns and then charge you for a small side of Chili separately, they'll grill up some extra onions for the hash browns, throw 'em together, melt cheese over the top, and next thing you know, you've got a delicious creation that will give even Godzilla embarrassing halitosis... ;-)

Other favorites are the Texas French Toast, and the Vegatable Soup... And tell 'em Jay sent you!
