Las Vegas... cha ching! I hit it big. The slot machines? The roulette table? Video Poker? Sports book? Heck no. I lost a total of $600 on those things. But what I did hit big on made up for all my losses and then some. I found... cha ching... the best French toast in the Western United States.

Le Café is the Paris Hotel and Casino's mid-range restaurant. It's where you go when you don't want the lines and lackluster cafeteria food of the all-you-can eat buffet, and you don't want to spend the money to ride the elevator to the top of the Eiffel tower for a twenty-five dollar risotto.

Le Café is quant and friendly. Tables are hidden from the lights and clutter of the gambling floor by bushes. The hostess sat us immediately. Our waiter was fast and knew the menu well.

Le Cafe - Las VegasHow to describe their French toast? How do you describe a cloud? It was lightly fried to a gorgeous golden brown... but I've seen that a million times. The butter on the side was softened. The syrup in its tiny ceramic picture was warm. You learn to appreciate these extras after you've had the experience of pouring cold syrup onto shards of French toast - cut to bits from trying to spread a chilled butter patty from a foil wrapper. But these wonderful extras... I've known them as well.

I took a bite. Cha ching! The texture... silky, smooth, luscious, unearthly. It makes you reconsider all the French toast you've ever had. Amazing bread... soaked to the perfect saturation point. And taste... imagine taking a lightly sweetened piece of French bread and trying to stuff it with delicate vanilla custard. Add a little more butter and hint of warm syrup and the jingle jangle noise of casino slot machines fall quiet. It's just you and your mouth and a taste of heaven.

Le Cafe - Las VegasMon ami petit déjeuner (my breakfast buddy) had the Eggs Benedict. "Ohh La La," I paraphrase. She loved it. I tried it. It was great. Mine was better. C'est la vie, mon ami petit déjeuner.
