Really love this place. Most of the times I have been, it has been almost empty, so I have received great service. They have a very New York-inspired menu which is nice to find in little old Gainesville. They also have Dr. Brown's soda, which is awesome. I have also gotten a lot of delivery, which they do for free to the downtown area.

Their breakfast is amazing, which they serve all day, and that is usually what I get. Especially love the Sicilian Bagel, as an example of some of the unique things they offer. Their sandwiches are very expensive but have huge amounts of meat, a la Katz or something like that. Their knishes are alright but nothing to write home about. (They're better at Sandy's.)

Definitely make your way over there. They turn into a bar at night, and have specials on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Jeff's Deli is the most disgusting food establishment in the state of Florida.
Rats HAVE been sighted but thats too obvious of a complaint for me...
I'll complain about the lack of sanitized cooking utensils, The lack of clean towels and sanitizer buckets to wipe down with. Oh and how about the fact that they ALL (even the owners) stick their fingers in the food to give it a taste before it goes out those swinging doors. They cut chicken and salmon with the same knife that's used to cut your sandwich. Can we say SALMONELLA POISONING.
Not a single cook is certified to be behind a grill.
Big portions...YES I give em that BUT its cuz they charge $8.00 for a sandwhich. Oh and that sandwich.... the meat was sliced by someone who eats every other slice that comes outta the slicer. And NO he doesn't wash his hands. Nope, in fact, Theres no soap to wash your hands with.
I'm quite positive the owners don't know anything about a HAACP Program, MSDS, or even Health & Sanitizing.
OK OK In all seriousness it's truely amazing there hasn't been any foodborne illnesses coming outta this craphole they call Jeff's Deli.
SHUT EM DOWN HEALTH DEPARTMENT, SHUT EM DOWN BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SICK.
ANYone who says this place is great must be a dear friend of the owners or even the owners themselves.
IF you eat there. just ask the owners for a tour of the kitchen. ANY GOOD food establishment would be happy to give a tour. There a reason they wont let you see behind those awfull swinging kitchen doors.
And if you're thinking about trying out their new location, just remember it may be clean but its the same ole dirty employees from the old location.
Good luck, dont forget your Tetnis shot.

the food is good depending on whos in the kitchen . the rats are a bad problem but it's been that way since it was firpos . the landlord { jim larson } refuses to do anything about the numerous ways the rats are gettin into the kitchen and jeff is way to cheap to spring for stopping the rats . the 3 second rule is in effect in a big way there . health reports are horrendous . dont even bother tryin to figure out how much your gonna spend there and dont be surprised when you do find out how much you're paying . my big beef stems from jeff himself . if he thinks he can getaway without paying his employees , he does . ask anyone who works or ever has worked there , outside of connie or whoever's running the kitchen now because they are the only ones he pays because jeff doesnt want to do the work himself . so continue to eat there but next time you do look under all the things sitting on the counter next to the register . yep , those are rat turds .

Because they are so busy, there is little time to pour coffee. However the cooking is wonderful and you need the time to relax and really get ready to enjoy the heaping amounts for WHATEVER you order. I loved the omlets to the hot dogs. Who ever heard of fab grits, except that describes just some of the long menu at Jeffs deli. They are open late on weekends on University right in the middle of everything going on. Try to get there for breakfast, thats going on all the time. Enjoy!

Excellent service and food.

For a New York deli this place has more southern hospitality than you'll find anywhere in Gainesville. The staff is exteremly friendly and accomodating. Jeff himself is usually there working hard with a smile. The all-american (my favorite) is a southern staple with a good portion of grits, eggs and bacon, all cooked to order fresh.

Interesting menu, friendly service, and big portions. I had the Sicillian bagel (scrambled egg, cheese, spinach, sicillian salsa, and garlic butter) and it was awesome. The coffee was strong and tasty. The place is popular and the meals made to order, so keep in mind that this is a place for a leisurely breakfast rather than one on the run. Jeff was working and he seemed like a friendly man with a sense of humor. I will be back! :)

This place is the best deli not only in Florida but in the whole Southeastern United States. It is better than any Miami place you can find. I am from Miami Beach and have yet to find a wonderful Deli who has great food and great service. Jeff the owner is an elderly man from Brooklyn, NY who puts every waking moment of his life into the deli. Hes been in the business his entire life and is a god at it. His cheesecake boy makes the best cheesecakes in the entire world. This is by far a great spot to visit if ever in Gainesville. He really should go franchise... Ill take one or two!!!

Best breakfast we've had since we've lived in Gainesville (7 years). We ordered the latkes (delicious) and the Challah French Toast (also delicious). The service was friendly and efficient. We left very happy and very full. My only complaint was that the windowsills were covered in dust, and could definitely use a good cleaning. We got chopped liver sandwiches to go (for lunch), and they were out of this world. I'd definitely recommend it - especially to those of us who miss the good deli food in NY and Miami! Only wish I'd found out about this place sooner!

Jeff's New York Deli is a little slice of heaven.

Noisy heaven, but heaven just the same. The raucous din of your fellow diners may make it harder to hear your friend one seat down inquiring after your dog, but you won't care very much once you sink your teeth into their chopped liver and latkes.

My personal breakfast favorite is their lox plate, piled high with so much lox (or nova if you ask nicely) I can never finish it all, along with cream cheese, onions, and tomatoes, served salad style next to a bagel to stack it on.

Other faves: the aforementioned chopped liver spread on a piece of dark rye toast, or consumed in tandem with latkes and sour cream; their blintzes that melt in your mouth; and their challah french toast which is deep fried and served with cinnamon and confectioners sugar.

Other breakfasts that I have enjoyed there: egg salad on dark rye toast; BLT on dark rye toast; corned beef topped with a fried egg on dark rye toast. (Noticing a pattern here? I *really* like the dark rye toast at Jeff's.)

You'll be noticing about now that I haven't really touched on the bacon, sausage, eggs, grits, or hash browns that are normally part of a southern breakfast. I can make those at home whenever I want, so I seldom order them when I go out. However, the hubster says they are quite good at Jeff's -- and he should know -- he orders scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, and grits every time we go there, along with a fluffy pancake. So if you are trying to convince a more traditionalist friend to accompany you -- there's your bribe.

My only codicil: I have yet to have a good knish there. Two out of two times it had a bottom so tough I couldn't cut it with a sharp knife. Hence, their score is one golden egg less than awesome.

So go to Jeff's for breakfast. It's one of my three favorite places for breakfast in Gainesville, the first being my house and the third being Bagels Unlimited on SW 34th St. Plan on taking a litte time while you are there -- everything is made fresh to order and the kitchen is usually swamped for breakfast. Spend the extra time chatting with your friends and the pleasant wait staff while sipping infinite refills of their tasty coffee. It is definitely worth it.
