PORTSMOUTH — In the wake of its third failed health inspection, the Friendly Toast is on notice that one more failed inspection will close the downtown restaurant for a week and a subsequent failure will close it for three years.

On a cold morning there is no place warm to wait. We waited for half an hour for our food to come after we ordered. There were 6 people. 3 orders of pancakes were cold and one was burnt. Waitress was no where to be found and to make matters worse a 20% tip was automatically added to the tab.

What is so wonderful about this place?

I brought visitors here for breakfast and everyone agreed they would never go back. It was disgusting. I ordered banana pancakes which had over-ripened to rotten banana chunks in the pancakes. Not only did it taste awful but the smell made me want to leave the restaurant. The final straw came when I saw the person cooking in the kitchen (we got stuck sitting in the back) and he looked like he didn't take a bath for a week and he had black nail polish on. ugh! Plus the kitchen looked pretty gross. The service was lousy and the waiters unfriendly.

The place is always packed. I love that there are multiple vegetarian options and healthy choices! The menu is always unique.

Very unique (and good menu) decor is 'hipster' but the breakfasts are GREAT. If you really like breakfast places (unique not Mc) this should not be missed.

A terrific breakfast option for every hipster. Great decor exceeded only by the terrific food. Hard to imagine anyone being disappointed. Go!

While the servers are sometimes downright scary and inatentive, the food can't be beat. We regularly drive an hour to go to breakfast here. I know there are other good restaurants in Portsmouth, but I can't seem to get past the Friendly Toast. For an ooooy gooooy surprise, try the Matt #2.

Great food, very large portions, but... incredibly filthy! Service can also be extremely slow even when the restaurant is not busy.

The "Guy Scramble" reigns supreme: A gargantuan portion of black beans, guacamole, eggs, homefries and cheese. Get it with the homemade cayenne cheddar toast and you'll know what to order as your last meal if you're ever sentenced to go to the electric chair. Great lunches (especially burgers) too, but we're talking about breakfast and the choices are impossible to beat. Waitstaff heavily tattooed, generally friendly (though not excruciatingly so) with hygiene on the, shall we say, European end of the spectrum. Still, I've never had a bad meal there.

The food may seem a little pricey at first, but then you see the size of the servings! They make their own bread their too.

I love it! I love it! I love it! I drive 90 minutes to get there and it's worth it. They have the best sweet potato french fries. Try the Almond Joy pancake. It's happiness in your mouth!

This is the best place for breakfast food! Not only can you enjoy it in the morning, but at anytime of the day! There have been many nights my friends and I have gone for some late night french toast after the bars. There are lots of choices that arent the typical western omelette and toast, there is something that everyone enjoys. I would recommend the Friendly Toast to anyone!

This is seriously the best breakfast place in the world. The portions are huge and everything I've ever had here has been excellent. I go here more than I'd like to admit... :) They make their own bread, too - each day there's a "Special Bread." If you're not adventurous, you can always get the standard bread varities, which are also excellent. The size of the slices are like Texas toast. You can subtitute fake meat for any item that comes with meat, in case you're of the vegetarian pursuasion. If you're within driving distance - make the trek - it's definitely worth it!
