Highland Grounds is a beautiful place to eat. It has a warm, comfortable interior that is easily as welcoming as the staff. The outside patio is very nice as well. The menu is accomodating to almost any taste, filled with delightful, inexpensive options including some of the best coffee around. The servers there are always nice, helpful and attentive and keep the coffee coming. The food was outstanding and overall I loved the place. My only critique is that there is a serious fly problem where the patio is concerned. I don't know how this could be remedied, but if something was ever done to expunge them I would eat there all the time.

This is definitely one of the most friendly, comfortable (and little-known) breakfast spots I've ever encountered, especially in LA. The service is competant, unpretentious, and usually comes with either a genuine smile or a devious smirk from one of their many cute, tatooed waitresses. Serving breakfast well into the afternoon everyday, you'll find local regulars and celebrities alike, nursing many cups of classically good-n-strong coffee on the open-air patio. Most of their dishes have a Cal-Mexican twist but we're talking much more than your average Huevos Rancheros. I recommend the Wood-fired breakfast pizza with bacon & pico de gallo or the "Benedict Arnold" --a take on eggs benedict--made with cornbread, enchilada sauce and jack. The spicy home fries, which come with nearly every breakfast plate, are quite good, but ask to substitute the fresh fruit. (A GREAT mix of melons and berries, cut fresh everyday.) If you stick around long enough, they have live indie-rock hopefuls on stage every evening, and their late-night menu with scrumptious pizza, burrito & enchilada creations rivals most other venues.

Award Nomination: Most Comfortable
