The Spar has been in Olympia forever and was recently bought and revamped by the McMinnamin's(sp?) people. Service was excellent. Eggs, hasbrowns, sausage and toast is a great deal at around six bucks. Daily pancake specials are a treat. Mine were banana walnut and were on the chewy side, but I like them that way. Overall, a better place than the old Spar, with much of the old ambience intact and the coffee much improved. Can be very loud when crowded. btw, address should be 1141 4th Ave. NE., not 114 14th.

The food was OK (I am selective), I love the atmosphere, the history in the place, the character and the waitress we had was GREAT all that got it to OK. If it were up to the food it would have been worse.

I'm pretty picky, so take my rating with a grain of salt. I was there on Sunday 1/15/06, on my way to Seattle to watch the Panthers-Bears game at the Fox Sports Bar downtown.

I consider this an OK place to eat breakfast. Better than Perkins, Dennys, IHOP, etc. Not as good as the Pancake Pantry in Nashville or the Dish in Seattle or even the Original House of Pancakes in uptown Charlotte. But if I happen to be passing through around breakfast time, I'll stop in. I had a cream cheese omelet with bacon and the griddle cakes. All good, though the egg was a little rubbery, and the cream cheese was all on one half.

The griddle cakes were excellent and I was pleased with the syrup served with the cakes.

I found the selling of tabacco products such as fine cigars, which is part of the business and part of its identity, a little bizzare for a non-smoking venue.

The place was crowded with locals.

For all you Breakfast lovers this place is great. Although way overpriced for the quality of ingredients that they actually use.(Bacon cooked at 4 in the morning and seved microwave fresh at 11.) As for the dinner, many of the employees, from what I hear will not eat the food there! Fake mashed potatoes, old and reused soups, terrible kitchen conditions, frozen steaks, Prime Rib cooked days before. And did you noticed a soft serve ice cream machine this summer. Wonder if you got a real shake or a quick one? Stick with breakfast and sandwiches!

Great mix of people--from state legislators to loggers to "Greeners". Incredible biscuits and gravy; huge pancakes; great omelets; and the homemade bread makes incredible toast. The hangtown fry (omelet w/oysters) one of the best. And they have great milkshakes too.

Award Nomination: Best Breakfast Ever
