You might look at this little diner from the outside and think to yourself who would eat there. But if you take the chance you will find customers from all walks of life. Police, fireman, dept. of water and power, dept of transportation and artists. All enjoying great conversation and the best ham and tri-tip in town.

You might drive past Nick's the first time you go there. It's the epitomy of a little dive of a restaurant, in the warehouse area on the 'other side of the tracks' (east} from Chinatown. Walk through the door and it doesn't get much better - until you're greeted by Irma, the ever-present and always cheerful waitress at this gem of a restaurant. The walls are lined with train and Los Angeles memorabilia, and the seating is at a horseshoe counter with a few tables for two tucked here and there.

Nick's does everything just the way I like it - they make their hashbrowns crispy and golden brown on the outside, done but still having texture on the inside; they know how to poach an egg; their breakfast meat is famous (for good reason - it's delicious!); the pancakes have that 'I'm glad I don't know how much fat they used in these 'cause they're sooo... good!' crispy outside and fluffy inside (try 'em with the homemade applesauce for an extra special treat); and best of all the staff makes you feel like you're part of the family (kinda rare in this big city). I've been meaning to try the BBQ - it smells delicious - but I just can't get past those hashbrowns...

Award Nomination: Best Service
