Things sure have changed in the past few years.
Staff has changed. Food ain't what it used to be. A tradition if fading. Might as well turn it over to Yankee tourists like everything else around here.

The Hot Shot has been around since 1925 and is an Asheville institution. Most people around here have nothing but praise for it... but I can't say I was all that impressed. The service was very good, but my eggs were undercooked, the grits had lumps the size of a quarter, and the biscuits were doughy. The breakfast steak was pretty tasty, though, and the coffee was excellent. If you're looking for standard diner breakfast fare, I'd recommend the Five Points over this place.

we must have caught them on an off day, because i've lived here in asheville for a few years and had heard nothing but good things about them before finally deciding to give them a try yesterday. granted, we came in right at the apex of the pre-church breakfast rush on a sunday morning, but looking around the place it didn't seem like many people were actually eating. the food was okay - standard diner fare, more expensive than some of my favorite breakfast haunts. i had a sausage omelet (eggs were slightly undercooked, not enough cheese) with home fries (woefully underseasoned) and biscuits (it's sad when you can get better biscuits at hardee's) and a bowl full of a flavorless viscous brownish-grey goo. they said, "gravy." i said, "is that supposed to be funny?"

to their credit, they did keep up with the coffee refills pretty consistently, which indicated to me that at least their wait staff was on the ball. however, a request for a bottle of hot sauce seemed to slip through the cracks.

given the fact that they're open late (24 hours during tourist season, i believe), this would be a great place to go after bars, and a very viable alternative to the typical "axis of breakfast" (waffle house/huddle house/denny's). maybe on another day i'd be inspired to leave a better review, but for now - 3/5 eggs.

Most Yankees take one look inside, turn up their noses and leave. Us locals love it that way. A few lucky ones do however come in. It's been there 75 years and I've been going 50 and my Grandpa first took me. It's authentic and great.

If your really lucky, you'll get Alma for your waitress.
