We went to Mother's. When we entered,we had no idea what to do. No one spoke to us at all. We just stood at the door. We figured out what to do. The food was not good...at all.
We went back on our next trip to New Orleans. We were with family who wanted to try it..despite our review. This time,we went for a different meal. We had watered down gumbo. It was awful.
Don't Go.

Too stand in line for so long only to eat average food, is not worth it. I've been here a few times during my yearly vist to Essence Music festival, and I have yet to get what the attraction is. I've had much better in the city. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but not that good. very little room, and don't look to clean.

We are on vacation in New Orleans and first day rushed to Mothers from the rating here. Mr Breakfast has always been right on the money. We walked in and a guy at the door mumbles to us something and turns away. We could not figure out what to do? Finally I pardoned myself and asked him, he ignored me.
I should have run then. Seems like you get in line and its all steam tables loaded with the days food at 7am. Including the breakfast. We sat down after paying more than a fine dining restaurant and listened to the employees yell and slam boxes down. Folks this was "Saturday" morning at 7amT? THe only thing fresh was two eggs that were fine. The ham were big hunks of dried meat along with the sausage. Worst service and nastiest dining experience in 40 years.

Once you have tried the crawfish etougee omellette for Breakfast or the Ferdi Special Po' Boy (if your preferences are more toward sandwiches), you will be convinced that this is the best breakfast ever.

The atmosphere is really diferent if you're from the NE U.S. It is a really cool experience not to be missed by the vacationer or the business traveler.

Oh, and if there is a line . . . WAIT . . . it's worth it.

All the way around my favorite. I ALWAYS plan to make a trip to New Orleans twice a year just for Mother's. The first time I went there twenty years ago I walked out of there feeling like if I died right then, I'd die happy and that's no lie. Good enough to slap your momma.

Wear your elastic pants. This is probably one of the best restaurants in New Orleans. Down-home cooking, lots of grease, perfect for that hangover you've got from hanging out on Bourbon Street the night before. The other reviewer is right, no one will bother explaining to you the esoteric nature of southern cooking, but don't worry, everything is great. Not just for breakfast either... they serve a great lunch and dinner. Go during off-meal times to avoid a wait.

In a taxi in New Orleans, we asked the driver where he likes to eat breakfast. He mentions that Mother's was his favorite place. He tells us, "they serve a heavy plate." Curious to see what that meant, we discovered what is our favorite breakfast place EVER! We returned three times during our visit. We still talk about the delicious breakfasts we had there. This is not a place to expect cushy service and be prepared to wait in a line. It's cafeteria style, and you are expected to know what you want and move along-- no one is there to explain the nuances of their food-- just order something. The food is basic, but absolutely delicious. It is completely worth the extra cost, as the eggs, meat and FABULOUS grits-- with a chunk of butter on top-- do make a heavy plate. We made a special trip to get there early so I could have the "black ham." This specialty is the glazed, outer crust of the ham baked every morning. Don't scoff until you try it. This is no frills eating, but I cannot think of another place I'd have breakfast when in New Orleans. Save the French Market for an afternoon snack-- eat like the locals.
