A fort worth staple..mostly for those German pancakes, and good ol fashion racist behavior that someone who is white won't notice. I am Hispanic..when I go with my white friends book club , church club etc.. service is fine and prompt even after the usual expected wait time. When I go alone or with my family..there is quite the difference. My last outing I waited over 40mins after ordering before I finally took my son and left after noticing white clientele that had been seated after we ordered were actually finishing their meals. Very disappointed, I've witnessed the treatment of the few black patrons the same way. Very sad in the year 2013. For Shame! Ol South indeed, the name says it all.

When I went to this place with my family, it looked inviting. Looked being the operative word. The waitress was very fake to us and hardly stopped by to check on us. We are African American, and I got the nagging feeling that we were looked down on because of our race. The portions were small, she never once came to check on us. My father wisely left no tip. You visit that tourist trap at your own expense and misery.

You cant say the waitress didn't see that! How can you possibly miss that! My food was cold! I found a hair in my dutch baby! I left no tip, horrible service wouldnt reccomed it to anyone. And also the new managment is just making this "once a great place" go down the drain.

I love Ol' South. I'm a college student now but I have been going there since I was in middle school. It was the "cool" thing to do back then, but now I just love the dutch babies. I am a little disappointed in some of the changes taken pace over the past two-three years. I am not a smoker, but I appreciated the atmosphere that the dual sections offered. A lot of people I am sure are glad though that the smoking is gone. And actually, Ol' South had nothing to do with the removal of the smoking section, it was put into effect city wide. One of my favorite things was the LOL (little old lady) waitresses. They are all so quirky and sweet and some not-so-sweet but completely entertaining. They have a lot of new staff, and a lot of them are high-school age kids. It just kind of ruins the authentic feel of the place. But I am still loyal to Ol' South and they have the best dutch babies in town.

HELLO,

The ol' South has stayed in the Benson and Brozgold family for 48 years. Our customers are our #1 priority.
The expense from management to make the decision to add more staff to provide better service to the customer has been a whirlwind of good compliments. In rebuttal to a comment posted earlier, how can a restaurant be reprimanded by adding better service to the customer and allowing a waitress to have a manageable section to allow he/her to give the best service possible. The majority of all of Ol' Souths loyal customers have been really appreciative of not having to wait 15 minutes to get their coffee filled because "one" favorite waitress has a section of 12 tables.
Ol South is dedicated to provide better service "to all" customers at an affordable price in a clean environment.
Ol South has been there for 48 years, and we plan on being there 48 more years. We want all of our customers happy!!! Mr Sanders i invite you in for a breakfast on me, so that i may win your loyalty back. Each and every customer is very important to me, and the culture shows that.

I have been going to this place for 6 years now without their knowledge, incognito......so to speak, just because I never wanted any special treatment or notice drawn to myself. Well now is the time to reveal my experiences...........

When Marvin owned this place it was the "Finest" spot in north Texas for breakfast. Since the "New" owner Named "Rex" took over it has been going downhill slowly but surly. He has added so many wait staff that sometimes.....there are more of them than customers!!! I mean "Rex"..... cut costs on your own behalf and stop already!!! You may think your not spending a lot on staff, but multiply it by the ten that are standing around, then by the 8 hours the do that and it adds up real fast.

ok, back off my rant for now...

I would go there for breakfast, and yes I had my favorite waitress, but with all the "New" wait staff...... now I have to wait for an hour or more to sit with her, not because of her inability to serve, but rather to the fact that she only has three tables now, (due to the "New" management cutting her tables so that he can have some teenybopper running around, not knowing what she is doing....... Rex, this is a pancake house, not a chili's or TGIF. Why walk into the best thing in town, and drag it down with your own hands, rather than be thankful for the gift given to you.

Now ..... prices...... They went up, that’s ok, if the service stays the same, but when the service (due to management and not staff) suffers, then prices drive people away as it has me.

I long for the days of past when it comes to Ol' South, it was a gold mine in its time, but I fear it's time has passed.

Rex, go back to the way things were in days gone by, You and more importantly We will be more pleased and more than happy to bring to you the all the wealth you are seeking.

Don't let this "Landmark" be just another failed business that you and your family have accomplished, but I will save THAT for another time.

This is my hometown and my grandma has been coming here since she was younger. the fact that it's not your typical big chain restaurant that has to please every needy need of todays customer, doesn't make it a terrible place. the atmosphere is 'ol south, good 'ol people, good home cooking, relaxed environment and keeps the coffee topped off. the food is simple and will fill your appetite, especially the german pancakes (my personal favorite). the place has been busy for years with returning customers, and that's the real review.

My Grandmother has worked at the Ol' South for 35 years. She dearly loved that place and all of her customers! I have eaten there since I was a little girl and have always loved the food until they recently had a change in owners. The last few times I've eaten there the food and service were horrible! She recently became extremely sick with bronchitis and pneumonia and still tried to go to work-but had to leave. She was treated horribly by the new managment in front of customers and had to quit. I will not be returning! I live on the other side of town and it's not worth it anymore.

Old school Fort Worth at its finest.
Great food and large portions. These people don't want you to go away hungry. Service has gotten tremendously better since the new management has taken over. Seems like they finally have enough people on staff to handle the crowds. Places like this are a dying breed. Why would anyone go to the larger chain breakfast places?

This place is a tourist trap. The food is good but don't expect awsome service. Everyone writing these reviews are probably not local as it is known for one thing round these parts. Late night grub after a night at the pub. Drunk people aren't huge critics. And if you are a critic, you wouldn't be coming to this place. It's cheap pancakes, not award winning service or haute cuisine and you'd be a fool to expect otherwise. Expect good pancakes and good coffee. If you want friendly service and chic atmosphere, try Del Frisco's, putz.

The thing about this place--it IS surly and truly ol' school. I would say the decor is horrendous except that I've lived in New York for 15 years so going back to this old high school haunt, I found I was really loving the 70's wood paneling and laid-back true Texas vibe. No one else has talked about these in the reviews, but if you go, you have got to get the German pancakes: a big skillet cake dripping with butter and powdered sugar that the waitress squeezes lemons into at your table and mooshes all together. It is heavenly. Best thing to eat here!

What can I say? Southern charm? Absolutely not. A friendly :Howdy" or "Welcome how yall doing?" No way. This establishment does not serve it's minority clientele well. Though my wife is Caucasian I am not. Our waitress did not smile, and NEVER checked on us. It was as though she avoided wanting to serve us, like we were an inconvenience Her body language said it all. Perhaps I wasn't one of the "good old boys" or red necks who frequent this place, perhaps I wasn't worth of service. I am a proud American, yet the atmosphere I felt in this restaurant was "un-American", it was discriminatory and cold, the attitude of anti-minority service and racism as subtle as it is lingers here. Not only did we never get refills on our drinks, our waitress was no where to be seen and when we did see her, she was serving other customers extremely well. When I did ask for my drink, the waitress went to the kitchen and passed it to me through the partition that separates the kitchen from the dining area, like a jailor passing a prisoner his food. How ironic. I really felt out of place and unwelcome. I know now I was the wrong color. My family and I will never return to the Old South Pancake House - it seems "Old" habits die hard here. The sad thing is people like our waitress who was cold and unfriendly do a disservice to this great country and to the State of Texas. We should have gone to IHOP or Chillis up the street. The food was nothing to rave about either. My worst $20 dollars ever spent

A great breakfast menu and great service also. Can be a little smokey at times. Easy to get to from Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum and from TCU. Located south of I-30 on University, behind Denny's.

An afternoon at the Fort Worth rodeo coliseum, GREAT pancakes, great coffee, down home service, and a great omelette. Life doesn't get much better! Only negative, is a little on the smokey side. I'm sensitive, but it's worth a little smoke for their breakfast! There is a non-smoking side. Two thumbs up! Worth driving from Dallas!

This 24-hour pancake house with ample seating (smoking and non-smoking) delivers good, basic buttermilk pancakes at a very decent price. The menu is filled with lots of other pancake flavors, but those can be iffy; stick with traditional and you can't go wrong. Always busy on weekends, from late Friday night through Sunday, but there is a lot of seating so the wait shouldn't be too bad (if at all; sit in smoking if you're in a hurry). Very nice waitstaff, and they do have things like sugar-free syrup if you need it. Overall a better choice than IHOP across the street, and if you're a tourist to Fort Worth you must stop in at least once.
