So sorry. Don't get your hopes up. It is closed, gone, kaput. Too bad. They had fabulous pies!

Yum! Thanks to another review, we zeroed in on this place and were not disappointed. Grandpa Allen's has a very loyal following and for a very good reason, the food is outstanding. They have a large, varied menu, and while I did not order it, the chicken fried steak looked like a very strong contender. The sausage cream gravy was really good. Beautiful huge sausage patties, fresh squeezed orange juice, crispy tasty bacon, and portions that were very generous, were the highlights. Everything is homemade and that is a good thing! And then there were the pies. We tried cherry, boysenberry, chocolate cream and custard, and they run miles around the chain competition. The crust is the best. Words of warning, they open quite early but only sell breakfast and lunch, and close at 2:00 in the afternoon. Seating is limited but the wait is not bad (we went on Saturday). This is a destination restaurant, seriously, and is close to other fun stuff such as Bate's Nut farm, Julian (for apples), San Diego, and not too far inland from the beach and Carlsbad flower fields. Make a day of it but be sure you include breakfast here!

All the food is homemade. The pie man comes in early each morning and makes his own rescipie for his pies and biscut n gravy.
