Waddles is gone for good. Replaced not by a Doughnut shop but a freakin Hooters of all things! Another piece of history gone to corporate Americana. God Bless America :-(

just a note about dates...the restaurant opened in Sept., 1945 and it closes for good --- to be replaced by a Krispy Kreme, fer cryin' out loud --- on May, 23, 2004. So don't delay!
And if you go after 2:30 p.m., you'll get to eat in the Teakwood Lounge, which is a lovely old dark wood with teak tables and bar --- and you might want to opt for the justly famous chicken basket, though the omelettes are tough to pass up. Whatever your decision, do it soon! Waddle's can never be replaced, even though there'll likely be another Waddle's restaurant in the future.
As a historical sidebar, note that the building was designed by the famous Northwest architect, Pietro Belluschi.

If you're driving into Washington State on I-5, you can't miss the huge neon sign and the clock with the knife-and-fork hands along the right side of the freeway. The sign is almost bigger than the restaurant. Opened in 1938, this cozy coffee shop/diner was a popular stop along old US 99. (It still has the old portico from the days when they had carhops.) Unfortunately, the build-up of I-5 has given the windows on the right side of the restaurant a view of a retaining wall. The interior looks like it hasn't changed much over the last few decades, although it is well maintained, clean and comfortable.

My kudos to the chef. My omlette was thoroughly cooked inside and out, yet the eggs were light and fluffy with no scorch marks. The portions were slightly larger than average. The breakfast menu, not including side items, ranges from a biscuit and gravy breakfast for less than $3 to a couple of multi-stuffing omlettes for just over $8.

The wait-staff is friendly. They usually waited for my coffee cup to run dry before refilling; but when it did, they were prompt with the refill. I never had to ask for a refill. The food came pretty fast, too.
