I just ate at Jack's this morning and was served the best breakfast I've had in a long time. I ordered eggs (medium), bacon (crispy), hash browns (crispy), and English muffin while my mom got a short stack of pancakes.

Our breakfast came promptly and was perfectly cooked to order--and frankly, I can't remember the last time that has happen to me! My mom's pancakes were very large and beautifully fluffy.

I also bought a bottle of their Habanero Hot Sauce--great flavor (plus lime juice) with the prefect amount of heat.

Jack's maybe just a bit overpriced (unlike Shat's--which is great--but VERY overpriced).

I rarely write reviews about restaurants or anything actually. But I can't help but write a review about Jack's Restaurant. My boys and I have been driving up to Lake Tahoe for the past 4 years for their Spring Break vacation. It has become our tradition to stop in Bishop to eat lunch at Jack's going to Tahoe and returning home. My boys (8 & 11) still claim that Jack's has the best burgers in the world! Their baked hamburger buns make the burger taste so amazing! As for the service... I can't say enough good things about that. One year I was running low on ice in our cooler for the meat that we had packed for our meals during the week. I asked our waiter where the closest store was to buy ice. He told me and then continued taking our order. At the end of our meal he brought me the check and 2 large baggies filled with ice. Such awesome people. They go above and beyond their duty to serve their customers. At times I've thought about flying instead of driving. But when I mention it to my sons they say.. But we won't be able to eat at Jack's. So we will continue with our tradition every year of driving to Tahoe.. just to eat at Jack's and purchase a new shirt. The rest of their food is great also by the way. :)

I stopped with my family at Jack's on our way home from a skiing vacation in Mammoth. We had breakfast there. The food was average but it became very unappetizing. The one thing that really bothered us, was the fact that our server wreaked of cigarette smoke everytime she came to our table. It was more than we could handle. One of my children suffers with asthma and can't be around anything to do with smoke. The smell was REALLY BAD!!! Then the last insult was when I went to pay the bill. The tall male cashier that helped me smelled every bit as bad!
I thought that in CA smoking was not allowed in restaurants. Someone REALLY needs to inform this staff that even though you aren't physically smoking a cigarette around people, the smell lingers to others around you that don't smoke and is extremely offensive. I am very cautious and aware of smoke because of my daughters condition. Please wise up Jack's!!!

My family went on a skiing vacation to Mammoth for the Christmas/New Year Holiday. On our way home we stopped in Jack's for breakfast, along with everyone else I guess. The place was slammed! We had to wait a while for a table. I understand that the road was busy, and I didn't have a problem waiting for a table, but after my family and I got seated, it took forever for our waitress to come over and take our order. After she finally did, we waited and waited and waited for our food. After an hour we decided that we had waited long enough so we just got up and left. Who knows how long it took after we left for it to ever show up? If it did, I hope that someone was able to enjoy it. We won't go there again. Jack's has been in business for a very long time. They should have it figured out by now how to serve people on a busy morning. Our server should have at least communicated with us on what was going on?!? We ended up driving south for another hour and we went to a restaurant in Lone Pine. It was worth the drive! Much better service! We actually got our food this time!

After reading the previous reviews about Marco the drug-dealer, Elvira the escort, and Dave the Uni-bomber, my wife and I were a little apprehensive about trying Jack's, but ultimately decided that it might be an adventure. I've got to say, we were both pleasantly surprised by the food, service, and general atmosphere of the restaurant. Our server, Bonnie, was polite, prompt, and extremely pleasant. Upon telling us that her shift had ended, she immediately stopped me from rushing to get my wallet to pay for the tab and tip, and told us it would work itself out. I ordered The Chicken-fried Steak (best quality steak I've ever gotten as Chicken-fried, although not breaded and fried to my particular liking), and my wife ordered the French Toast. The portions were large, and the price was more than reasonable. Marco was the manager on staff and showed us to our table. I forgot to ask him if he moon-lighted as a drug-dealer; but living off of a restaurant manager's salary in Bishop, could you blame him? Nice guy, nonetheless. And you can't beat the fish on the wall; it's like the large-trout museum of California. We'll be back.

My husband and I stopped at Jack's on our way to Lake Tahoe. We celebrated our 15th Anniversary. We met the sweetest waitress, Cheryl, at Jack's. Ate a wonderful breakfast and enjoyed the experience so much that we stopped back on our way home. We wanted to be in Cheryl's station since we enjoyed her great personality. Not only did she remember us she remembered we have been married 15 years!! Jack's should be happy to have such a great waitress to represent their restaurant!!! We will definately go there again. And Cheryl thanks for the recommendation of the 7 grain bread and excellect muffins! Say hi to Beau for us!!! Bob and Judy

At Jacks's we had our worst restaurant experience during our holiday in the States. We were seated in a booth where we could still recognize the food that was eaten before us on the benches. When we asked for a local beer, we got a Budweiser :-0. Then we had the honour of having 'Elvira' as a waitress saying that they were out of soup and whether we would like to have a salad that never came until we begged for it. We ordered two overcharged New York steaks, but we ended up with one reasonable steak and one greasy black roasted piece of uneatable dead animal which we really had to return. Then 'Marco' came saying that the other NY steaks were of the same 'quality' so they would make us a top sirloin instead. The new steak was eatable but far from being sirloin, even further from being top. Furthermore, he came together with a pile of dirty napkins but without the fries for which we had to beg again. We almost burst into tears of laughing when we received the cheque: they charged for two NY steaks while the 'top sirloin' we received was in fact cheaper on the menu. The only thing we enjoyed at Jack's was 'Elvira's' face when she discovered we did not give her any tip :-)

My wife and I stopped at Jack's while traveling south from N. California. We had a great experience at Jack's...food was very good, as we had expected. We had 7-grain whole wheat bread with our breakfast and we found it exceptional so we bought a loaf to take with us. Wish they were local so we could buy more.

Service was very attentive and friendly. We loved the decor of the restaurant and we would go back there in a heart beat.

Long wait for service. The food was ok, nothing great or even good. IHOP has way better breakfast. We stopped becaused we had heard it was the spot in town. Great coffee. The prices are abit steep for what you get.

I live in Bishop and am very aware of Jack's Restaurant. All that I can say, is that if the tourists knew what the local people know about this place, they wouldn't go. From the outside it looks like. Nice decor, and the fish on the walls are entertaining. The food can be good when it wants to be, and I really never had a lot of problems with the food when I used to eat there. It's just the people that they have working there that bother me. They have had some really good servers there, but they seem to go by the wayside. The ones that I can't understand why they keep are still there year after year. Another person on here described the one that I am talking about. She looks like Elvira. She is about the rudest waitress that I have ever had anywhere. If looks could kill I would have been dead! I refuse to go there anymore until she is gone. I know that I am not alone on how I feel. I know alot of Bishop residents that won't go there because of her. When we pay our hard earned money to eat out, we at least want someone that will serve us with a smile and some courtesy. The tall guy at the register is named Allen not Dave like someone else said. He likes to sweep the floors around the tables when you are eating and he stirs up dust. Another manager that they have there that works sometimes during the day and at night is a known drug dealer in town. His name is Marco. Jack's has been a landmark in Bishop for a long time and that is the only reason why people seem to flock there. Just like Schat's bakery. But if most people knew the truth about this place and what goes on there behind the scenes, I don't think that they would go. I am happy that someone told me about this website so that I could voice my opinion. They don't offer comment cards at this restaurant, or else I would have filled the box up by now. Too bad Bishop is so void of restaurants. There just aren't that many choices here.

Breakfast is definately Jack's specialty with there waffles and biscuts and gravy. "The country benedict" is one of their specialties and I highly recommend you try an order. Buttermilk biscut halved and topped with two eggs, patty sausage and Jack's famous country sausage gravy is one of the best breakfasts around. Their country gravy is the best in Southern Cal and Eastern Sierras... And if you're still hungry... Desserts are also awesome here!!! Carrot Cake has plenty of moist cake with gooey white frosting. So basically come for breakfast/lunch and save plenty of room for dessert.

P.S. Ohh if carrot cake is too much for ya check their "lemon bricks" their huge lemon bars that are basically chunks of lemon overload and are perfect dessert to travel with as a snack on the road.

We came to jacks of the request of a local resident of Bishop,we arrived at the restaurant at 1:15 in the after noon thinking that it would be a good time for lunch.

We both were seated pretty quickly, drinks were served, the server came back and we placed our orders for lunch. The wait time for the food was not long, just the food was not that fresh or was done in a rushed order.I had eggs and bacon that came with hash browns that were 'burned' no big deal.

I asked the server to replace them and they did without problem, but it took over 20 minutes to get the new one to my table..my eggs buy now that I have half ate are getting cold, and my wife's 'well' done cheeseburger was cooked very rare to the point that blood was coming out of the burger patty and soaking her french fries..Blah!

I got my hash browns and the server said they were sorry, het it was busy, but overall we just got up and paid and just left jacks and probably will not go back. We had such high hopes from what the local said, maybe it was that they were very busy, the place was very full, but it really puts a sour note on going back.

And from what most of the reviews here I have read, its not like this has not happened before or other customers have had bad experience's also.
Such a nice place to visit though.

After stopping at Jack's about midday several years ago, I "advertised" my great experience far and wide. The decor on the walls was worth the price of admission in itself. All in all, it was one of the great dining experiences in a small town ever, from San Diego to Seattle!

Wow! I have eaten here a few times. I go thru Bishop almost weekly. Food in past was average. This past visit I had french toast, sausage links & coffee. Coffee & sausage were both very good, french toast was fair. A bit under cooked & bit gooey on inside. I then noticed a picture of their carrot cake, 4 tier & looked absolutely awsome! So at $19.00 I bought a whole cake. Drove 140 miles, got home & couldn't resist. To my surprise cake was NOT as pictured, only 2 tier & appeared half baked. Frosting was good & then tried the cake, YUCK! Tasted sour. I called asking for a refund & told them what I had found inside. I hope that this is one time deal here, cause this was truely awful. JEERS for the misleading picture & SUPER JEERS to the cake. Need to change your picture & fire this baker.

My husband and I were travelling through Bishop on our way to Lake Tahoe late in the morning on Thanksgiving Day, and stopped here for breakfast... but... When I lamented to Katherine, our server, that I was going to miss a traditional Thanksgiving meal that year, she checked with the chef, and got me the first serving of roast turkey out of the kitchen that day...AND SERVED ME A FABULOUS TURKEY BREAKFAST...!!! My husband ordered a delicious 'traditional' breakfast... We have been through Bishop several times since then, and ALWAYS stop here...and my husband ALWAYS orders breakfast...Tip; They make (and sell) several versions of bottled hot sauces... My favorite is their habanero...I buy some every time I'm there...

If you are ever in Bishop or even just passing through, you MUST stop at Jack's. Jack's has been a traditional late night stop on the journey from So Cal to Mammoth for over 25 years.

Jacks' has been a family tradition for over 30 years. My dad took me there for the first time when I was 8, now I take my son there every time we travel to the Sierras'. My experience with the menu varies from pancakes to chicken fried steak and eggs. I have never had a bad meal. The service at Jacks' epitomizes service with a smile. Think about this...after being in the back country for a week or so, I can't think of any other place you can go stinkin to the high heavens and still receive friendly service. Defenitely a great meal with great atmosphere, the kids love looking at all the neat stuff on the walls especially the record size fish(o.k. that's dads' favorite). Keep up the great service, hopefully our grandchildren will get to experience breakfast at Jacks'.

I had the Ortegas, Salsa And Jack Cheese Omelette with a side of biscuits and gravy. The portions were huge. The omelette was cooked to perfection with plenty of cheese both inside and out. My biscuit was heavy and moist... and the gravy... wow.

For as good as the food was, the main reason I'll return to Jack's is the service. The staff is courteous and warm. I had a three-day beard and looked like I hadn't slept in days and they still gave me the VIP treatment.

Jack's definately ranks in the top 5 of all restaurants I visited over the year. Don't drive through Bishop without stopping.
