Atkins, Dr. Robert

b. 1930 d. 2003

Creator of the high-protein, low-carbohydrate Atkins Diet. Dr. Atkins was the founder of The Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine and Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. He authored more than a dozen health and nutrition books. Atkins' original 1972 book, "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution," was contrary to the recommendations of most nutritional experts at the time. While many remain skeptical about the Atkins Diet, it has become increasingly popular since the 1992 publication of his book, "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution."

Unsubstanciated claims that Dr. Atkins died obese continue to shroud his legacy.
