Sugar Frosted Flakes
Introduced in 1952
When this cereal was introduced in the early 1950's, it was described like this:
The biggest, sweetest thing that ever happened in cereals. Every crisp flake is sparkling all over with Kellogg's secret sugar frosting. Honest folks... one taste is worth a thousand words.
A 1959 magazine ad described Sugar Frosted Flakes like this:
Gr-r-reat... big toasty flakes of corn. Bustin' out all over with flavor and energy. Filled through and through with Kellogg's secret sugar frosting. We brought this one out for the kids but the grownups caught on fast. Have you? Put a tiger on your team! Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes.
Around 1984, Kellogg's dropped the word "sugar" from the name and the cereal became Frosted Flakes.

When Tony the Tiger, Frosted Flakes famous mascot, first appeared on cereal boxes in 1952, he had a challenge on his hands.
Kellogg's was torn between two mascots for their new cereal, Tony and a motherly marsupial named Katy the Kangaroo - complete with a joey (baby kangaroo) in her pouch. Tony and Katy had already beaten out two other possible mascots - Elmo the Elephant and Newt the Gnu - before the cereal ever left the factory.
The final choice was given to consumers. Boxes featuring Tony the Tiger sold much better than those with the Kangaroo and Katy was retired to only be heard of on weird cereal websites like this one.
Company Description: Kellogg's was originally founded as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1906. The company's founder Will Keith Kellogg is credited with inventing corn flakes along with his brother John Harvey Kellogg. The company was renamed the Kellogg Company in 1922... Comments About This Cereal
What do you think of Sugar Frosted Flakes?
By F. T. I. They were Gr-r-reat... in the late 50s and 60s and in the 70s when the sugar went away. So did my patronage. Haven't had them when corn syrup was introduced. So I can't rate this cereal today.
