Oatmeal With Dates

Oatmeal With Dates

(1 serving)    Printable Version
  • 1 cup oats (not quick oats)
  • 1 cup dates (pitted and halved)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
As originally submitted, this recipe requires a double boiler and a cooking time of 45 minutes. I find that it works just as well if you bring the water, milk and salt to a low boil in a regular pot, add the oats, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 6 minutes. Much faster and just as good. Someone commented that there was too much sugar. Personally, I thought there wasn't enough. I increased it to 1 packed Tablespoon of brown sugar. I also chopped the dates into smaller pieces for better distribution in each bite. (This recipe was submitted in 2002. It was tested and photographed in October 2014.)

This seems simple, but the dates really add a terrific flavor.

From Foodguy

Way too much sugar and too many ingredients... Just do 2 parts water, 1 part oats and 15 to 20 dates in a pot. Cook it. Eat it. Done.
