Chocolate French Toast

Chocolate French Toast

(6 servings)    Printable Version
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 slices white bread (day-old bread works best)
  • 3 (1.5 ounce) bars chocolate candy bars - halved
  • 2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
  • confectioners sugar (optional)
In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, sugar, vanilla and salt.

Pour half of this mixture into an ungreased 13" x 9" (or similar) baking dish.

Place six slices of bread flat in a single layer over egg mixture.

Place one piece of chocolate in the center of each piece of bread.

Top with remaining bread.

Pour the rest of the egg mixture over all. Let stand for 5 minutes.

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.

Place the prepared sandwiches in the skillet and fry until golden brown on both sides.

Dust each serving with confectioners sugar if desired.

If you like your eggs raw, then it is probably pretty good. The problem with this recipe is the inside of the bread doesn't get cooked. We made it the way the recipe said and the inside was soggy, so we baked it, hoping that would fix the problem. Possible solution would be to cook one side of the bread then flip it over add the chocolate and top with another bread that has been partially cooked.

I tried this recipe and I liked it, but I think that if you but creamy peanut butter instead of the chocolate it wouldn't be as sweet.
