These were alright, pretty eggy and not super flavorful. Not crisp like I like them, really light.

I found this recipe on here several years ago, I'm now relegated to making waffles for birthdays, Christmas brunch, and anytime I'm home for the morning! The real beauty of this recipe is pre-whipping the egg whites, it's improved many other recipes I do too, but this is seriously my favorite waffle recipe!

By W. Advice

For best results, don't replace the vegetable oil with butter. Butter has water in it. When heated, that creates steam and that usually mean a soggy waffle.

By Use Butter?

Does anyone use butter instead of oil? I was surprised that NO recipes for waffles call for butter. Isn't it supposed to make the waffle crispy and more delicious?

Best waffles ever! The Donkey (Eddie Murphy) on Shrek would be very pleased to belly up to the breakfast table with the Ogre and friends to enjoy some of these fantastic "WAFFLES". They were extra crispy on the outside and fluffy and tender on the inside. I added a teaspoon of vanilla, two shakes of cinnamon, one shake of nutmeg and an extra egg white. Don't over mix either. I served them at a brunch with omelets to order and bloody Marys; the waffles were the talk of the brunch. I thought people were going to pass-out they were so good; the folks raved about them. Serve with melted butter and warm maple syrup and you'll be in waffle heaven:^)

This waffle recipe is amazing! Better than any other store bought or homemade waffle I have ever made, and I've made quite a few. These are just worth every effort. I leave the dry ingredients pre-mixed and add the eggs in when I'm ready to make them to diminish the work, especially on early mornings.

Amazing recipe! My kids say that they can make the waffles perfectly by saying, "mom, would you make us some waffles please?" I did add vanilla extract and 3 tablespoons of sugar because we prefer them a bit sweeter, but they were PERFECT otherwise. I find vanilla and sugar to be personal preference and add to suit ones own taste. Thank you for this amazing recipe!!!

I used this recipe to serve to guests at a breakfast buffet. The guests could choose their toppings, maple syrup, chocolate sauce, cream cheese glaze, crushed french vanilla almonds, raspberries and flaked almond crumble. Will definitely make again and be a bit more adventurous - maybe add banana and chocolate bits or raspberry and white chocolate... the fillings are only as wild as the imagination!

We loved these waffles! Added a teaspoon of vanilla to the wet ingredients and they cooked up light and crispy. Freeze beautifully, reheat in toaster oven. Made six 8 inch round Belgian style waffles. Definitely will use again. One hint... if you're waiting for everyone to wake up before making waffles, prepare wet and dry ingredients and beat egg whites and keep everything separate until time to cook waffles.

My wife and I have tested a large number of waffle recipes for our go to Sunday breakfast. I am happy to say that we do not have to look any further after trying this recipe! We are both used to using a good amount of syrup, but even with a very small amount, these were still delicious. Next, I am going to try using a small amount of homemade lime syrup with a light dusting of powdered sugar.

Sounds great to me. I don't have a waffle iron. How would this recipe work out for pancakes?

Comment submitted: 7/26/2012 (#14188)

By Vicki

I'm surprised at the high rating for this recipe, but I suppose it could be down to a difference in preference and taste between Americans and Europeans. For me, it had far too much oil - this was the only thing I actually changed in this recipe - they are salty to the point of being savoury - and I'm not the type to be afraid of fat and salt, but this was far too much. I didn't care for the texture at all, and will go back to my regular recipe with whole eggs (less of those too), which turn out a much crispier waffle. I also find that the frothy texture of the batter makes it difficult to control the amount of patter to put on the iron without either making the waffles too small or spilling over.

To really be the best ever, you need to add vanilla (1 and 1/2 teaspoons) and nutmeg (just a 1/4 teaspoon). Now we're talking.

Please can some one tell me if the cup measurement in the waffle recipe = 250mls and the tablespoon measurement = 3 teaspoons or are these measurements made with American cups and spoons. My grandchildren are waiting for me to make these and I must get it right. Thank you Jennifer W. N.Z.

While although this recipe might be ok I would recommend cutting the milk from 1 3/4 to 1 1/4 as my grandmother used this recipe for... well at least since before I was born and that was in 62' and the waffles have always come out perfect So it's

1 3/4 c Flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 T sugar
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix dry ingredients or sift together, add...

1 1/4 c. milk or buttermilk
3 eggs
1/2 c. oil

Then fold in the 3 egg whites until just folded but do not completely incorporate them into the mix or it's ruined in the old style wafflemakers you can get about 4 full squares in the wafflemaker and a total of 4 full waffles so in these newer and smaller compact sizes I'm guessing about 8 full waffles.

What is it about this recipe that makes the best waffles I've ever had? You don't really need syrup, they're that tasty. I'm not a "from scratch" cook, so I was worried how they would turn out. But they are so easy to make & absolutely scrumptious.

MAYBE, it would be helpful if you told us how much water or milk to add..... That is unless, you want to make a brick out of DOUGH. If you want batter, you need liguid. I had to do a lot of tweaking. Also, dont add as much salt as the recipe says.

Note From Mr Breakfast:
Sorry Daniel... it looks like you missed it in the ingredient list. This one calls for 1 and 3/4 cup milk. Better luck next time if you try it again.

Excellent! They came out perfect in our first batch with our new waffle iron. Changed the recipe slighty though. It's easier to use a little less egg (eg... 1 egg, 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk, salt or 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 2 cups milk etc...) and as long as you use enough baking powder, they come out fluffy.

The waffles tasted great. I took the advice from other reviews. I added 1 tbsp of vanilla, 1/2 tsp of maple syrup and a pinch of cinnamon to the batter. It was AWESOME. Also I made my own whipped cream to top the waffles. CAN YOU SAY THERE IS A PARTY IN MY MOUTH:-). All you need is 1 cup of whipping cream (heavy is fine) 2tbsp. of sugar and 1/2 a tbsp of vanilla extract. Then beat (electric beater is better) the ingredients together until they stiffen. TRUST YOU WILL LOVE THIS. MY 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LOVED THIS DISH AND I LET HER HELP ME MAKE THIS. SHE WAS PROUD.

It does have a lot of eggs, but this is how I remember really good waffles tasting. I never liked the super crispy Belgian waffles that you get at the restaurants that don't have any taste, so I don't let it on my Belgian waffle maker for the full time. The minute it starts steaming, I take them off. This gives you a nice fluffy waffle without all the crunch.

Comment submitted: 11/25/2008 (#6967)

I will give this recipe a try. However, I too would be leery about that much egg. Still, I have tried my stand-by recipe with the egg whites folded in-- very effective! Very light and melt-in-your mouth results.

However, in my pursuit of laziness, I have found that simply beating the eggs whole before mixing in also produces impressive results towards light/crispiness without the extra time/mess of whipping egg whites.

I measured the ingredients before I sifted them all together, not sure if that makes that much difference... and I added one extra tablespoon of sugar and some trail mix. Nothing personal Waffle Chef, but if you wanted a dense waffle then this was not the recipe for you. I found it to be one of the best waffle recipes for a light fluffy waffle. I like the fact it only had one table spoon of sugar and was chalk full of flour. Definitely the secret to a fluffy waffle is the whipping of the yolks. Thanks Jensen for the recipe.

I get recipes online from many different sites, but never care enough to comment on them. This recipe is different. I used this recipe to serve a bunch of people, and all of them said the same thing- that it was the best waffle they'd ever had. One modification I did was to use a tsp of vanilla, which enhanced the flavor nicely. Also, if you're making a double batch, I'd recommend splitting the batch and folding the eggs into each right before you're going to use it. (I made a double batch and by the time I was ready to use the last half of the batter, the eggs had liquified more and the waffles, though good, were not as fluffy and didn't bake as high.)

All in all, A+ for this recipe!

This is a fairly easy recipe. My 12 year old makes it on his own. The waffles are very filling and the consistency of the batter is a little thin. I have to use a cup of batter per waffle instead of 1/2 cup and it tends to make 8 very filling waffles. It is the best cooking waffle we have made - it ends up being very crisp and very light.

I love this recipe and have made it three times now. Today I printed a a copy to keep by the waffle maker. Regarding earlier comment from Davo... I'd suggest adding a teaspoon of vanilla or some grated nutmeg or a couple dashes of cinnamon. I like to let the syrup add most of the flavor and actually prefer a more-plain waffle to let the syrup stand out... but I can see his point about more flavor... pretty easy to fix.

Thanks for a great recipe. - Harmony

This was a very light and fluffy waffle. I made it with 1 cup all purpose flour and the rest whole wheat. This worked fine. and followed the advice of another reviewer who added 1/2 tsp vanilla. I also added a handful of chopped pecans to the last half of the batter. Yum! I will surely make these again with the pecans!

Great feedback, but beating eggw hites is a huge pain (unless you have a compliant husband! :-) Just mix the eggs in and the waffles are still great but just a little less fluffy.

Also, makes at least 10 waffles -- way more than the recipe suggests.

By Little Bit of Brandy

Recipe Rating (out of 5):

We usually use bisquick, but ran out, so tried this. Other than adding the baking powder, sugar and salt, it's not much different prep time. We even do the whipped egg whites, which I heard is the way to make them light. What I did this time was use one of those stick blenders to do the egg whites and then the last blend on the batter, and that did the trick to take these to the crispy stage. To keep waffles warm for feeding a lot of people, store them in a 200 degree oven on the open rack. We always add ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg and ground pecans. It actually takes a lot of those ingredients to make them distinguishable. This time I also added a tea of brandy flavoring. Be daring. They were great. Oh, I put butter on the griddle right as they are ready to come off.

May I suggest substituting cooled melted butter or margarine for the oil and adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract (NOT imitation vanilla flavoring) to the wet ingredients? It makes a subtle but wonderful difference.

Of course this is my first recipe to try out, and I will be trying others.

I've always tried to find a recipe to match the waffles my friend's French Canadian mom used to make us when I was a kid. This recipe is very close! They ARE light and fluffy. I've found better success splitting the batter into two bowls and adding half the beaten egg whites to the first batch. I saved the second half until after the first batch was cooked. This way ALL the waffles stay fluffy!
