Popeye

Popeye

(1 serving)    Printable Version
  • 1 slice bread
  • 1 large egg
  • butter
Use a small juice glass to cut a circle from the center of the bread slice.

Place bread in well buttered pan over medium heat. Crack egg into the hole in the bread and fry it until the egg is set - flipping once so both sides are cooked.

Also brown both sides of the circle you cut out and serve it spread with jam.

Kids love it! This family-friendly dish is known by many names. What do you call it?

I've also heard this called "Toad-in-a-Hole"! In my family we fry bacon first, then use some of the drippings to fry the bread on both sides before adding the egg into the hole. Lower the heat, cover, and cook til egg is set just the way you like it! More cholesterol but also more flavor.

I make this for my daughter... I call it "Eggs in a Window"... by frying the egg, leaving the yolk runny, it adds to the fun!!!

This is lush. The egg soaks in the bread so it is like completely one piece of toast.

It's mighty tasty with some Daddies brown sauce!! Yum. Yum.

I just made this and its awesome, but for those who wish for it to turn out like in V for Vendetta, you must place a lid over your pan and cook on low to medium heat with about 2 tablespoons of oil, add butter for more flavor.

Don''t forget to break the yolk once you put the egg on to fry in the bread.
