Baked Orange French Toast

Baked Orange French Toast

(4 servings)    Printable Version
  • 8 thick (about an inch) slices of day old French bread
  • 2 large eggs - beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon orange zest
  • powdered sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Prepare a large baking dish (large enough for the 8 slices of bread to lay flat side-by-side) with cooking spray. You can also use a baking pan, but a nice large dish will keep excess egg from dripping away from the toast.

In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. Soak each slice of bread in this mixture until completely soaked. Place soaked slices flat in prepared baking dish.

Bake for 6 minutes or until bread is lightly browned. Turn bread slices over and bake 6 or 7 more minutes until golden brown.

While toast is cooking, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan combine orange juice, orange zest, honey and cornstarch. Cook over medium-high heat - stirring often until syrup thickens. If it begins to boil, reduce heat slightly. This usually takes about 3 minutes to make.

Serve two slices of French Toast per serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with orange syrup and butter if desired (I always desire a little butter:)

Tastes just as good as French Toast from a fry pan, but this way you can make 8 slices at once and it stays warmer longer. Just skip the whole orange syrup step if you want traditional French Toast with maple syrup.
