Michigan Baked Oatmeal

Michigan Baked Oatmeal

(4 servings)    Printable Version
  • 2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
  • 1/2 cup almonds - sliced
  • 1 large apple - unpeeled and grated
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar - packed
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat a 3-quart dish or baking pan with cooking spray.

In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Transfer to baking dish. Sprinkle top with additional almonds if desired.

Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Serve hot.

Recipe Note:
You can make a variation on this recipe by not using the almond flavoring and cherries. Instead, add 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon, 1/2 cup of raisins and 1/3 cup of coarsely chopped peanuts.

There's no cherry like a Michigan cherry! This oatmeal will taste good with dried cherries from any state, but get them from Michigan if you can.

This is the first dish we ever served to my 91 year old father that he remarked, "This is larruping good!"

Love it! My daughter made it for my friend and I when we visited her. We BOTH asked for the recipe! Now I'm going to make it for her when she comes in for Christmas!

I'd add more brown sugar next time - maybe a full 1/2 cup. But we just sprinkled more brown sugar on each serving and it was great.

This was very yummy! I sprinkled brown sugar over the top of it a couple minutes before it was done and then put it back in the oven to melt the sugar a little. Also, I think next time I'll try adding some cinnamon and maybe nutmeg and a little salt. But my taste buds are kind of beat up so it's probably just me. But it was delicious! Thanks so much for the recipe.

I have four boys, and they all love this! I make it at least once a week now. I leave out the sugar in the recipe and we just add butter and sugar to taste when I serve it. My husband inhales this! IT'S WONDERFUL!!

This is phenomenal! I made it this morning for the first time. The house smells like yummy oatmeal cookies, and the rich, creamy oatmeal is such a delightful change from apples and cinnamon! BTW, didn't taste the apple at all (but this Mom is happy that it's in there!). Next time I will just make a half batch as it was more than enough for our 2 6yo daughters and me for breakfast.
