Apple Pancake Topping

Apple Pancake Topping

(4 servings)    Printable Version
  • 1 and 1/2 cup sliced apples (2 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup raisins - optional
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cocoa powder
I tried this topping on Eggnog Pancakes and it was great. I went with the optional raisins and I added just a teaspoon of corn starch so the sauce around the apples would thicken. I also opted to chop my 2 apples into smaller pieces. Let the topping mixture cool for 10 minutes before using and you'll find it thickens more during that time. (This recipe was submitted in 2010. It was tested and photographed in December 2013.)

How To Make Apple Pancake Topping

Place a medium saucepan over low heat. Add all ingredients.

Stirring frequently, cook for 12 to 15 minutes.

Mixture should begin to bubble and thicken as the apples soften. If this isn't happening after 10 minutes, turn up the heat slightly and cook until apples are softened and surrounding syrup is nicely thickened.

Serve warm over your favorite pancake, French toast or waffle recipe.

Very delicious and I had no problems caramelizing my apples.

I didn't thicken. If you ad corn starch and boil for and hour you might get the restaurant style topping but its not worth wasting away your life on this stuff!
