There were roaches in the bathroom. Four of them around the toilet. One crawled up my leg. I plan to contact the health department. I was sick to my stomach.

My nickname is SUNSHINE. I went to the 101 a lot in 2002-2004! I tried just about everything! It was all great. The french fries were a favorite of mine with the spicy mayo. YUMMMM!! The waitresses and bussers were really friendly, the cooks were really good and cute. There was somebody special that I know there! The managers were great also!
I would recommend this restaurant to everyone!!!
You just have to try it!

I first went to the 101 in September 2004 as it was close to where I was staying. I was blown away by the great food, the great coffee and the friendly and efficient staff. On my last visit to LA (March 2005) I had breakfast there every morning (I can recommend the omelets!) and also sometimes supper. A great place, and, when I next visit LA, I will be eating there. I am also impressed with the place's pedigree - apparently Aldous Huxley ate there. Cool or what?

On a recent trip to LA, Hollywood in particular, I chose to eat at the 101 based on the decor, which I had read about online prior to my trip.

I was not at all disappointed in the look of the place. Seeming to be straight out of my imagined idea of what a 50's/60s era coffee shop would look like.
Rock walls, funky colored tiles, comfy booths and cool light fixtures, it was all pulled together nicely.
Obviously a trendy place by the look of the other diners, I knew I had found what I was looking for. It was hip while still being subdued.

As for the food, well what we ate was very good. I had the salmon scramble & coffee. it came with hash browns & toast. It was delicious and filling.
My girlfriend had the breakfast burrito which was fat & smothered in salsa, guac & sour cream. Her sister had the tuna melt on rye, which she could only finish half of. It was served with a mixture of regular fries and sweet potato fries, quite good.
My only complaint was that coffee re-fills were a bit on the slow side and the food was brought by someone other than our waitress, fairly minor.

Overall I loved the place and would go back.

As you walk into to the 101, your expectations for a great breakfast begin to grow. The early-sixties diner decor (primarily brown and red) provides a fine backdrop for your non-greasy greasy-spoon experience.

If she's there, try to sit in Sunny's section. She's an attractive, enjoyably-crazy waitress/actress who will tell you about the celebrities who have been in recently. Her David Spade story is worth the price of breakfast.

I ordered Chirizo and Eggs with a side of grits. When it arrived, I wanted to take a picture and frame it. Their hashbrowns are served in the form of a round patty cake. Could it taste as good as it looked?

The simple answer is "yes". The grits were real and they were very nice. The Chirizo and Eggs were delicious and filling. You might want to ask for some salsa to give it just a little more kick.

The 101 is a Los Angeles rarity -- a lot of friendly people in one place. I found myself having an impomtu chat about old hotels with a girl in the booth behind me.

Good people and good food. I'll be going back to the 101. I hope to see you there.

My breakfast with the side of grits came in just shy of $10.00.
