I’ve gone to Jinky’s Café four times now... it’s very close to my home. The pancakes have been consistently good. This morning I tried the pumpkin pancakes and they were great. I agree with the review below that egg dishes can be touch and go. They have a very expansive breakfast menu that’s partially eclectic i.e. the pea guacamole (boring) that’s served with many of their Mexican breakfasts.

While my experiences there have been positive for the most part, I have two complaints. First, what's with the cold butter? They make beautiful pancakes, but by the time you spread the hard patties of butter of them, they’re ripped to shreds and lukewarm.

My second problem is with a particular waiter. I overheard him being referred to as either "Paul" or "Paw". We’ll call him Paw. He always has a disillusioned, nervous air about him. Once, we had him as our waiter and he was unfriendly and impatient. Today, we sat at the counter and didn’t even have Paw as our server. We ordered and enjoyed some coffee. We’d probably been at the counter for 15 minutes when Paw came up to us and, in not so many words, accused us of skipping the line and taking our counter seats without staff approval. He even went so far as to check the list of names that had been crossed off. He offered no apology after verifying our legitimacy. In response, I now offer up Paw as a candidate for the worst server in Los Angeles for the 2006-2007 breakfast season.

Every other server we’ve had there has been friendly and efficient.

In short, try the pancakes and avoid the waiter with the uninterested facial expression and small pot belly.

Crab Cakes BreakfastI visited the restaurant previously and got their crab cakes benedict - which was pretty good - but not the best I'd had. Looking around, their pancakes looked amazing, so I went back to try them.

The pancakes WERE good - I got wild blueberry - and they were fantastic. Unfortunately, we had to wait and ask for syrup for them. But overall - GREAT pancakes. The rest of the breakfast was sub par, though. The eggs I ordered over medium had completely runny whites and were unedible. The bacon had been cooked and recooked so many times it was hard and brittle and didn't even taste like bacon. And the toast came unbuttered - I hate that. It's impossible to spread hard butter on dry toast.

When you order coffee - they just give you your very own thermos so you really never run out. That's a nice touch.

Go there for the pancakes - but be wary of what else you might get. Hopefully they'll get their service back on track. I think a sudden surge of popularity has sent them into disarray. I have good hopes for them though - it has the potential to be a fantastic breakfast spot. (They serve lunch too.)
