We lived in Monterey 6 years ago and First Awakenings was a usual haunt for us because it was kid friendly with great food and even better service. We were back in Monterey over Christmas (first time in 5 years) and the food and service were as good as we remembered (some the wait staff was still there).

The menu is wonderfully varied and showcases the areas local produce. Their kids menu isn't just the standard fare of chicken nuggets and grilled cheese and the kids have choices of sides (just like the grown-ups) when ordering.

I love a place that puts water and coffee pitchers on the table and checks that they stay full. The only downside was that it was unseasonably cold and windy the day we were there so we had to eat inside instead outside by the fire pit.

Fantastic breakfast, huge portions, awesome menu selection, prompt service, wonderful atmosphere, great coffee, what more can you ask for, and the price was less than you'd expect for a gourmet breakfast like this.
