The line is long if you go too late on the weekends, but if you end up there bright and early you'll be fine. Even going later in the day on weekends, I haven't had a problem when I go on my own. During the week it's fine.

And yes, they do have grits. Delicious grits (for DC, that is). And eggs any way you want them. Coffee's not my bag, more of a tea person myself, so I can't comment on whether it's great or just average but I always get refills quick and often. Tasty home fries, good omelets and breakfast specials. Pancakes are also good. Not a fan of the steak and eggs, but maybe that's just me.

I know the description here says "hipster," but it's not really. I'm about as stick-in-the-mud as you can get and I find it very comfortable. The only things keeping them from being awesome are the prices, but they're standard prices for the area, not too expensive but not really cheap either.

The Diner is my favorite Adams Morgan joint.
It has great atmosphere and really good diner food and it is OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY!!!!!!
Just so you know, they do have grits and poached eggs and the coffee is soooo much better now than it used to be. I have been watching and they have started grinding their own beans and brewing small fresh batches. I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I'll see you there...I'll be sitting at the counter (Its first come first served).

Great club sandwiches, but limited breakfast offerings.. no hashbrowns, no poached eggs, no grits.. mediocre coffee, mediocre home fries.. BUT there is a fun selection of creative omelets and english muffins smothered in hollondaise. Best part about the Diner is the music, atmosphere, and neighborhood! And who can resist a chocolate malted milk shake for brunch?

Great atomosphere....which is what you go there for. The food is solid, but by no means knock your socks off. It is typically quite a long wait as well.

Everyone raves about this place and I've been here a few times. The line can be rediculously long outside (but it does move quickly). I'm not fond of the crammed-in seating styles, but that's typical for DC these days. The food is fine, but the coffee is wretched. We thought it was just a one-off thing, so we went back twice. All three times: horrible coffee. I can't figure out why. The problem is: I can't find any other place in the area that's better overall, but I'm still looking.

Almost a perfect cross between an American diner and a Paris brasserie -- The Diner's got all the minerals.

Real vinyl seats in the booths; diner-type counter that doubles as a bar; checkered tile floors; cozy/noisy atmosphere; serving food all day and night.

The one departure from diner authenticity -- and this is a good thing -- is that a lot of the wait-staff are verrrry easy on the eyes.

Breakfast food is available any time -- try the fantastic steak and eggs in all its gooey glory, sopped up with a side of frites. And if you've got a serious case of the 2am munchies (very convenient given that The Diner is crawling distance from 90 percent of Adams-Morgan nightclubs) go the full meatloaf-and-mashed-potatoes route and wash it all down with a real chocolate milkshake.

Line's out the door on weekend nights but most mornings (which, after all, is when Mr. Breakfast is in his element) it's not too difficult to get a table or even a booth, and bask in the sun streaming through those big plate glass windows in the front.
