Breakfast was alright. I didn't really care for their sausage. I also ordered my eggs scrambled with American cheese. Confirmed with waitress that they had American cheese because I hate cheddar on my eggs because it doesn't melt. Eggs came with Cheddar...yuck! Food wasn't bad, just not to my liking.

Our family (3 generations) went in with some trepidation (esp my mother in law) but between the food (awesome), the service (VERY kind to our kid) and the free entertainment (not sure it's daily but from their calendar wall it looked like it), we were SOLD. Went back two more times before having to head back to Chicago. SO glad I found it on this site; even more glad I didn't pay attn to those who whined about service (I tend to notice high-maintenance people have the most problem with service). My favorite place coast to coast hands down but call ahead so you don't have to wait.

BE AWARE - PLACE HAS MOVED. It's no longer on 10th Street but has moved two blocks away and is now on 8th Street between Nicollet & Marquette.

As others have said, food is outstanding, service is underwhelming. So go for the food & be prepared to have to flag down your server when you want something.

I love the decor, inspired by Ralph Steadman of Gonzo fame. This is the place to go if you're looking for a unique environment for breakfast, nestled downtown underground. The place is very clean and the place puts a lot of pride on their food, and it is good, however it's not earth shattering.

I enjoyed the peanut butter and felt it was good, but similar to any other organic homemade peanut butter you can buy at Lund's or Byerly's for example. The jams are also great, but not earth shattering. I enjoyed the lemon ricotta pancakes and would recommend them, but my friends did not care for their ranchos huevoes, as they were sweeter than anticipated as a result of the mango salsa. The major drawback is the lackluster service. Like others mentioned, our glasses went dry several times and food came out lukewarm, and was unfortunately served with a touch of attitude.

Overall, I would definitely recommend going to try the unique dishes served at this place and the decor, but bring a bottled beverage with you.

I am from out of town. There were so many things I wanted to try, so I ordered the huevos ranchero, one lemon-ricotta pancake, and an order of sausage bread (I wanted the fresh peanut butter)! I fully intended to take some home with me. I guess Khrushchev was right...the road to hell IS paved with good intentions. I ate it all. The best ever! It was all amazing. Not easy to say about breakfast food. You'd think there is not a lot of creativity in things like peanut butter, but I must give the devil his due. Devil in the kitchen, that is. I was sad to see it end. Seriously, I'd make a trip here just for this place!

I absolutely love the food at HK, but I have never had good service there. The first time we were there was during the week, the time was 10:45. I ordered breakfast and my hubbie asked whether he could order lunch. The waitress just said no, that lunch service doesn't start until 11. No offer to ask the chef, no offer to put his order in at 11. And she was not pleasant about it. I waited tables for years, so I am not a fussy customer (unless provoked), but even I was angry at her attitude.

Every time we have been, our glasses have gone dry for long periods of time and at least once we had to flag someone down. And we never go when it's busy.

One week, we ate at HK two days straight (testament to how much I love the food). The second day, I ordered the exact same thing as the day before and the waitress said "no special orders." When I explained that I had that the day before, she actually told me that I was wrong. Hmmm, well, I raised a fuss (I will admit, it's because I got mad about the "you are wrong" comment) and got what I wanted. Since that incident, we haven't been back.

Love the food. The lemon ricotta hotcakes are to die for, delicious blood orange marmalade and peanut butter made fresh. If you don't want to wait an hour or more on weekends MAKE RESERVATIONS!

Breakfast has always been given the backseat, it seems, but HK has taken it seriously and also to a new level. Nothing weird or goofy; just really REALLY good food. Where else can you find HOMEMADE peanut butter, marmalade, tea (yes, homemade iced tea even), lemonade, hot cocoa, you get the idea. Lighthearted art, good service (servers wear pj's on weekends I guess because the owners say nobody should have to go to work early on weekends). My kids love the boxes with age-appropriate toys. Who cares about parking...this was definitely worth it. (Some folks from Japan were there today and I overheard them say they had been there 4 days in a row. One guy said they all went to bed with the take-out menus deciding what to have the next day!!!)

Unless you're on the street, weekend parking is expensive ($4 in nearby lots) -- and soon the meters will run on the streets all seven days, too. Breakfast was great. Bison sausage is lean and has a maple glaze that adds a definite sweetness to the sneaky bite it packs. Hashbrowns were very good - nice and crisp. Breakfast for two went to $25 including the tip $4 for parking. Folks were waiting to get in on a Sunday morning at 10:00 -- must have been the downtown churches emptying from the early service. :-)

I'd go again.

Giant cups of coffee. Tasty menu that is all over the place. Steel cut oats with fresh berrys. Rosti style potatoes. Creative egg dishes, pancakes, waffles, etc. Everything (sausage, meats)seems to be made inhouse. Large portions. Attentive service, even when busy. Can be loud on weekend mornings(brick walls).
