In June of 1956 my great grandfather, Frank Defont, purchased the Top Rail Restaurant, in Livermore, CA. I am wondering if this is the same establishment. I don't have the address of the one he owned back in 1956. He also owned the Standard Coffee Shop and Frank's Little Kitchen. Lisa Melin Angrisani langrisani@aol.com

Railroad Cafe has closed. Reportedly the owner had health problems that resulted in closing the restaurant. The parking lot was always full, so it was a popular dining establishment.

They will be missed.

Went here with a friend a couple weekend mornings ago, and while I have to say, my friend was raving about how well she liked the place, and while I'd always seen crowds when the restaurant was at it's original location, I was not impressed with either the service or the food, and I will probably not return!

Forgot 1 thing, they dont take cards so be sure to have enough cash or your checkbook, not a good thing for a big restaurant not accept credit or debit cards

Not gonna write much about this place, just an ok resteraunt, average food for a not so cheap price, i know this shouldnt matter but thought there would have been a train theme in this place being called the railroad cafe, not a train in the whole place.

I eat at Railroad Cafe frequently. I have enjoyed many of the items on the menu and have yet to be disappointed.

One thing I like is that you can get anything on the menu, breakfast or lunch, anytime they are open.

A friend of mine raved about this long-time Livermore establishment. My husband and I went last Saturday morning. He ordered biscuits and gravy. You can tell a lot about a good breakfast restaurant by their b & g. It was terrible. The gravy arrived cold and the biscuit so tough he couldn't cut through the bottom half. It looked good. I had the Eggs Benedict on Puffed Pastry. It was OK but couldn't cut through the bottom half of it either.

We loved the diverse menu so thought we'd try it again this Saturday. My husband had hash, potatoes and toast. I had the Ranch breakfast; chicken fried steak, potato pancake, biscuit with gravy and fruit cup. The best thing I could say about it was the fruit cup. The gravy although nice and hot this time had absolutely NO FLAVOR. I don't think I've ever had such tasteless gravy. The chicken fried steak wasn't fresh or maybe just overdone and the gravy on top made it gooey. The potato pancake looked great, nice and golden brown but was completely tasteless and gooey as well. I ate my fruit cup and that was it. The waitress never asked how it was; she just picked it up and walked away. Needless to say we will never go back. My husband said the hash was definitely canned, his toast had no butter and was barely brown and the fried potatoes although nice and brown were soggy. They were just fried on one-side.....$20 later you would find better at Denny's which I never thought I would rave about. Sorry, we were SO hoping to find a great neighorhood restaurant. This one leaves us cold.........

I like this restaurant. I have never experienced rude service, the staff there is always polite. It's always busy, so be prepared to wait a little for fresh food. the combinations are a little eclectic and large, but generally good. I love the pumpkin bread and fresh fruit, that comes with yogurt. Egg combos are fine.

The food is decent, but the service at the Railroad Cafe is really awful. I’ve eaten there several times and the weekend hostess is curt and rude. She once shouted at me for not closing the door quickly enough on a warm Livermore morning because I was letting the cool air out (it was only 9:30am and I was holding the door for my friend!) I was really embarrassed when the entire restaurant looked up to see who she was yelling at. I’d have left, but my friend really wanted to stay. The second incident occurred another weekend morning when I politely asked our server if I could place my food order with my beverage order because we were running late. She said "they don't do things that way" and "this wasn't the place for fast food." (This was after we were told it was a 20 minute wait; which was actually 45 minutes. We didn't mind waiting, but wished our server would have been kinder and helped us out.) It's one of the few breakfast places in Livermore - but I will NEVER recommend or return to this place -- these people need a serious lesson in customer service. If/when Livermore gets a few more breakfast places, this place will lose a lot of business due to their crabby staff.

My family and I absolutely love this little cafe. We eat there whenever we just want to relax. Have been going here for years and have no plans to change. We enjoy bringing family and friends to the Cafe.

Waitress needs people skills training and could explain the menu. "Yuppie" food, strange combinations but pretty good anyway. They do not take credit cards, which, to me is a minus. If they want my money they can do it my way. We will not go back.

Myself and a friend had breakfast at the Railroad Cafe on October 14, 2007, and it was terrible. We both had the Ranch Breakfast. The chicken fried steak was tough and with little flavor; the eggs were not cooked as ordered; the gravy that came with the biscuit was very poor country gravy. the potato pancake was very dry and somewhat burnt. The server was not very friendly and we had to ask for a coffee refill. My friend and myself would not return to this cafe for a meal, nor would we recommend this cafe to anyone.

WOW! This place is amazing! The menu for lunch & dinner is very imaginative. Don't be afraid to try something different...you will be glad you did! The Cheese Blintzes & Swedish Pancakes are mouthwatering, with fresh berries and vanilla cream. The potato pancakes are a trademark item for these wonderful owners. You gotta try the 10oz. burgers.... the absolute best in the Tri-Valley. The chicken salad, homemade pumpkin bread, and the maple custard are to die for. This is the "Ma & Pa's" place to be!! One in a million! GREAT,friendly service Open 7am-2pm daily. Closed on major holidays. Cash/local checks only. Credit/ATM cards not accepted.

Railroad Cafe is by far the best breakfast/lunch place you'll probably ever eat at. This restaurant is where you'll find all the locals sitting at the counter. Although the pancake/french toast-type foods are phenomenal, its my opinion that they should be more noted for their salchicha sausage chipotle & eggs or their welsh rarebit. As odd as they may sound, they taste absolutely heavenly. While ordering, ask the waitress to bring you a fruit taco before the meal, delicious. My mom says that they make the best hamburgers she's ever had. Beware, if you plan on going mid-morning on either saturday or sunday you might have to wait 10-15 minutes to get a table. Once you eat there it will be no surprise that the head cook is actually a chef.

The Railroad Cafe offers new and exciting breakfast fare. The menu items are unusual but taste outstanding and are healthy. The items are a little pricey but well worth the pleasure. The staff is busy but friendly and efficient. Try the potato pancakes, the fruit tacos and the lemon chicken sausages. The strawberry cups have yougurt and the chorizo and eggs are fabulous!
