Until sometime in 2000, Saint Paul used to have a most excellent little breakfast joint, known as The Uptowner (which strangely wasn't anywhere near Uptown) which had some of the finest breakfast grub in the Twin Cities, as well as a legendary pile of hash browns.

Alas, they closed. But the staff, and more importantly, the menu live on at their sister restaurant, The Dinkytowner, located in Minneapolis, as chance has it, across the street from the venerable Al's Breakfast. If you've never been to either, eat at Al's. If you've been to Al's, however, or if Al's isn't open or the line is too damn long, then eat here.

The restaurant itself is weird. It's a funky nightclub in a basement complete with mosh pit, pool tables, a dance floor, DJ's, tap beer, and *lots* of smoke. However, it also has a damn fine breakfast menu. Hashbrowns are the crown jewel here, an order of hashbrowns results in a veritable mountain of deliciously crisp potatoes. Waffles are also quite decent, especially if you like them doctored (I particularly recommend a nice chocolate chip waffle). But the real gem among the entrees is the cajun breakfast, hashbrowns grilled with fresh green peppers, mushrooms and onions covered with melted cheddar, two over-easy eggs, smothered in Hollandaise sauce, sprinkled with cajun spice and served with toast. It's one heckuva good breakfast. Their "Tex Mex" is also pretty good as well, and they can make a respectable omelette.
