Custard Apple Smoothie

(6 servings)    Printable Version
  • 1 custard apple
  • 5 medium strawberries
  • 1 mango
  • 1 desert spoon of wheat germ
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 5 or 6 scoops of vanilla yogurt or ice cream
Cut up custard apple (remove all the pips), strawberries and mango and place in blender. Add lemon juice, wheatgerm and yogurt (or ice cream). Blend until smooth!

If you don't like mango you can take it out of this recipe. If you are finding it hard for all the ingredients to blend add a little milk or juice.

I wasn't sure what exact measurement constitutes a scoop, so I used two 6-ounce containers of vanilla yogurt. I also used a banana instead of mango. And I used a Granny Smith apple. I guess I just made it completely my own. Long story short... I like it! (BTW... what part of the country has custard apples? Don't ever see them in CA.)

Okay... so I clicked on this article thinking custard meant creamy. I'd never heard of a custard apple. I looked it up and it said a custard apple is also called a bullock's heart or a bull's heart. It sort of looks like a red pine cone. I think I've seen them in Pavillions' specialty food section as Sugar Apples. And finally my question... what does a custard apple taste like?
