Maple syrup prices just keep going up, up, up up! This is a great alternative.

I love this stuff. Made it this morning from childhood memories. Mom fixed this whenever we had pancakes. We couldn't afford maple syrup in my house in the 50s/60s. Being a bit broke this summer I reverted to my childhood to help make ends meet. My efforts didn't turn out so sell this AM, thus I checked for recipes. Seems I forgot to add butter. Makes a big difference. Other than that. Had forgotten how good it tastes.

The brown sugar and water proportions are the same as the ones my mother used to make the syrup I was brought up on; no other ingredients. Have a suspicion it is an Upper Ohio Valley thing dating back to the upriver movement of sugar/molasses in steamboat days. I boil the mixture for at least 5 but not more than 8 minutes. Much more tasty than maple syrup.
