Maypo

Maypo From: Independent / Undefined
Introduced in 1951

At the height of its popularity, Maypo Oat Cereal was produced by Heublein Inc., a company which also sold A-1 Steak Sauce, Grey-Poupon Mustard and distilled liquors. In the mid-1950's, Heublein acquired a small Vermont company called Maltex and, along with it, a maple-syrup-flavored hot cereal they called Maypo (originally Maypl Oats).

The cereal's famous mascot, Marky Maypo, was created in 1956 by an artist named John Hubley who based the character on his four-year-old son Mark. The first television commercial featuring Marky Maypo was wildly successful and the character's catchphrase, "I want my Maypo" became an instant part America's pop culture lexicon.

The Maypo product line has changed hands several times over the year. It is currently produced by Homestat Farm, Ltd.

Always dressed as a little cowboy, Marky Maypo was a finicky kid who hated oatmeal until his cartoon father persuaded him to try Maypo.

It's widely suspected that Marky Maypo's signature line "I want my Maypo" was the inspiration for MTV's signature slogan "I want my MTV!"

The instant stuff is terrible. Bring back the original. It's getting cold here and I would like it for the winter.

I want my Maypo! I grew up on it and gave it to my sons when they were little, but I can't find it in the Annapolis, MD area. I have checked Foodlion, Giant, Safeway, Shoppers and Christophers stores. Please tell me where I can get it, please!

Love this cereal. Now I can only get the instant which is still good but the original is better. (I've learned how to cook it to create the "lumps"!) I just sent 3 packages to my grandson in Texas as they can't find it there. It cost me $12.00 to ship!! I told him to enjoy it because I'm not doing that again! At least here in PA I can still find the instant on some shelves but not many.

I really miss finding this in the local grocery stores and I wanted to know if it is possible to find anymore or do I have to do a special order and use my nieces and nephews and send it to them from Spokane, WA to Orlando, FL... but now I can't find it anymore. Can anyone help me with that? I think if you reintroduce this outstanding product in Costco and all the leading grocery stores it would sell again.

I'm in Raleigh NC and just got off the phone with the manufacturing company of Maypo. I was told it would take several months to even get it added to our local grocery stores inventory list. I've been visiting my home state of NY where I stock up enough to bring back to last the winter. I have to have My Maypo!
