The restaurant at the Atlanta Hotel is officially only open to guests of the hotel, but polite visiting diners are treated graciously by staff. (Generous tipping helps increase the welcome for returning non-guest diners, of course! As a long-time resident of Bangkok, I've always enjoyed eating all-day breakfast at the Atlanta without ever having stayed there.) Tipping well is easy because the food, service, and atmosphere are wonderful, engendering good will all round -- and at incredibly reasonable prices. Atlanta breakfast fare ranges from Western standards (hearty pancakes garnished with lime and honey; eggs prepared any style with toast and crispy bacon; hot oatmeal with fruit; toast with butter and jam, honey or marmalade) to traditional Asian items (rice porridge with savoury mix-ins; fresh fruit combos; several versions of fried rice). The many beverage options leave diners spoilt for choice: fresh fruit shakes; freshly brewed-up hot chocolate; freshly brewed coffee; espresso drinks; iced tea or coffee, and so on. The restaurant is decorated with photos from the Atlanta's illustrious past and present, including portraits of the original proprietors, a visionary Thai lady and her German husband. Their son now runs the hotel with such attention to detail and keen sense of humour that even the paper drinks coasters feature notable quotes -- thereby making great souvenirs of one's delicious experience there! So many people have tried to steal the menus over the years (due to their informative, well-written annotations about the hotel, food and Thailand) that the hotel has resorted to installing long, heavy rods in them to deter thieves. The restaurant offers a relaxed, homely, somewhat old-style European ambience that's particularly rare in today's Bangkok. Patrons will find themselves drawn back again and again by the Atlanta's food, atmosphere, and prices.
