Hunger set in as we were leaving Las Vegas yesterday morning. Twenty minutes south-west on the 15 from Sin City is Jean, Nevada. We stopped at the Nevada Landing Hotel and Casino to see what they had for breakfast.

As a general rule, the buffets in cheaper casinos should be avoided. For the same price as the all-you-can-eat buffets, you can usually get a satisfying breakfast in an adjacent caf� or restaurant - and have more confidence that your eggs, et al haven't been sitting in a vat for an hour.

Next to the all-you-can-eat buffet in the Nevada Landing is Captain's Caf�. It was probably fancy decades ago. The room is grandiose and the furnishings have a Sinatra-Vegas feel, but time has changed the opulent dining room into something dingy and worn.

But I didn't come for the furniture. The food was good and it was cheap. I had the eggs, hash browns and toast breakfast special for $1.99. At that price, I was worried the servings would be small, so I also got the biscuits and gravy breakfast special for $1.99. Both specials were large enough to satisfy on their own.

Neither of the specials was amazing, but they were somehow perfect for my situation. Having lost my shirt in Vegas, I just wanted a big decent breakfast at a super reasonable price. And that is exactly what I got.

The food came out fairly quickly and our coffee cups were never empty.
