Easy Baked French Toast

(6 servings)

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 12 slices of day old bread (preferably about 3/4 inch thick)
Grease a 13x9 inch baking dish with a generous amount of butter.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla, salt and milk, half of the sugar.

Place the the bread slices in the prepared baking dish in a single layer (it's okay if you have to squeeze them in). Pour egg mixture over the bread. Turn the bread slices over once or twice so they are completely coated. Cover and let set at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Sprinkle the remaining sugar over the bread.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown.

Top each serving with butter and maple syrup, jam or just a little powder sugar.

You get the best results if you use a grainy artisanal breakfast like sourdough or a French baguette.
