Chocolate Banana Bread

(12 servings)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup butter or margarine - softened
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 6 medium bananas - mashed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
I really liked this banana bread. Some people may feel it has too much chocolate. That's a feeling I've never experienced. It's incredibly moist. It kept well wrapped in plastic for a full week. This recipe makes two 9 x 5 loaves or six 5 1/2 x 3 loaves. The large loaves took 60 minutes to bake. The smaller size took 40 minutes. Overall Impression: If you make it once, you'll want to make it again. (This recipe was submitted in 2007. It was tested and photographed in June 2014.)

How To Make Chocolate Banana Bread

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Prepare two 9x5 loaf pans by spraying lightly with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda cocoa powder.

In a separate medium bowl, cream together butter (or margarine), sugar and eggs. Stir in mashed bananas and vanilla.

Add wet ingredients and the sour cream to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Distribute the batter evenly among the two loaf pans.

Cook for 60 minutes or until a toothpick or knife inserted into the center of one of the loafs comes out clean (no batter).

This is so good warm with a light smear of butter or a little jam. For best results, use very ripe, soft bananas.
