Ham And Cheese Bread Pudding

(8 servings)

  • 1 small loaf of Italian or French bread (about 8 ounces) - cut into 1-inch slices
  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces of cooked ham - cubed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon white pepper
Grease an 11x7 inch baking dish.

Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter. Now, cut the bread slices into 1-inch cubes. Place evenly in the bottom of the baking dish. Layer the ham over the bread, followed by the cheese.

In a medium mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, milk and all seasonings.

Pour the egg and milk mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish. COVER and REFRIGERATE overnight (at least 6 hours).

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes until golden brown. To test for doneness, insert a knife in the middle. If it comes out clean, the bread pudding is done.

Cut into squares and serve warm.

A classic recipe from my Grandma Jean's recipe drawer, It's as good today as it was in the early 70's, when she used to make it for me and my sister.
