French Toast Sticks

(4 servings)

  • 10 slices white bread - cut into thirds
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
In a large shallow bowl, beat together all of the ingredients , except for the bread.

Heat a large skillet of griddle to medium heat. Spray surface generously with cooking spray. Make sure surface is hot before cooking. Test with a drop of water. If it kind of dances, the pan or griddle is ready. If it just sizzles, let it get a bit hotter.

Dip the bread sticks into the wet mixture until well-coated on both sides. Place the sticks on the skillet or pan. Cook until golden brown on each side - about 3 or 4 minutes per side.

Serve the sticks warm - but cool enough to handle.

I usually warm a little maple syrup - just on low in the microwave for 10 seconds. If each person get a tiny serving dish of syrup, it makes a nice, fun presentation.

Dip your sticks and enjoy!

After making this recipe, I now always add just a touch of flour to my French Toast batters. It really helps make that distinctive outer coating come out more.
