Gitche Gumee Granola

(16 servings)

  • 2 pounds rolled oats
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (your favorite kind)
  • 3/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 and 1/2 cup oil (canola oil works great)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 Tablespoons vanilla
  • 1 and 1/2 cup honey
In a large mixing bowl, combine the first 5 ingredients.

In a seperate medium mixing bowl, combine the last 4 ingredients.

Add the contents of the smaller bowl to the larger bowl and mix well.

Spread mixture out on a large well-greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 200 degrees for 1 and 1/2 hour, stirring ocasionally.

Stores well for weeks in an air tight container.

Gitche Gumee is the Onondaga Indian word for "Big Lake." It is most often in reference to Lake Superior and the region of Michigan's upper penninsula that borders the great lake.
