Italian Hot Cocoa

(4 servings)

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kahlua or Grand Marnier
  • whipped cream - for top
  • ground nutmeg or cinnamon - to sprinkle on top
In a medium saucepan, stir together the unsweetened cocoa, sugar and cornstarch. Slowly, stir in 1/2 of the water and set over low heat. Stir in the remaining water and all of the milk. Continue cooking over medium-low heat- stirring often - until the mixture is thick enough to coat a spoon (about 10 minutes).

Stir Kahlua or Grand Marnier. Top each serving with whipped cream and ground nutmeg or cinnamon.

This recipe uses less than a teaspoon of Kahlua or Grand Marnier, but that little bit of liqueur makes this hot cocoa taste really special.
