Buttermilk Rolls

Buttermilk Rolls

(12 servings)    Printable Version
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • buttermilk
Sift dry ingredients together. Mix in shortening. Add yeast dissolved in warm water. Add enough buttermilk to make a soft dough. Knead until smooth. Make into rolls and let rise until double. Bake at 400 degrees until golden brown.

Add the buttermilk slowly - just enough to make the dough pliable. This dough will keep for several days in the refrigerator.

This really is the nicest recipe for rolls that I have ever found - I have been cooking both professionally and at home for most of my 65 years, and this really is a great discovery. This will certainly be a staple in our diet here in Ireland.

What a wonderful recipe. I used butter as the shortening. I used just enough buttermilk to make a soft dough. These nice warm rolls were a H I T!!!

Many thanks,
