Toad In The Hole

Toad In The Hole

(2 servings)    Printable Version
  • 1 or two pieces of bread per person
  • 1 egg per piece of toast
  • butter or oleo
  • salt and pepper to taste
Heat a skillet over Medium or Medium-High heat, and melt 1 or 2 T. butter in pan.

For each piece of bread, either tear a hole in center about 1-1/2" wide, or use a cookie cutter or wine glass to cut a round hole in center of bread.

Butter one side of bread well. Add to hot skillet, butter side down. Cook 2-3 minutes until beginning to turn golden brown.

Put a dab of butter or oleo in the hole. Break an egg into the hole of each piece of bread in your skillet. Cook for 3 or 4 minutes until egg begins to cook and turn opague.

Butter the top portion of bread, then using a spatula, turn over and cook on 2nd side, 3-4 minutes, depending on how "hard" you like your eggs.

When bread is golden, and egg is cooked as you like it, remove from pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

Eat with a knife and fork, or just eat with your hands.

Traditionally called "Toad in the Hole", my sons liked to call it an "Egg Monkey". Good, quick breakfast, travels well for an "on the go" morning. Enjoy! Happy breakfast!

This is sometimes called "Egg in a Frame" as well. Toad-in-the-hole is actually a British recipe that has sausage, milk, eggs, and flour in it. Quite a bit different: see here.
