Amish Oatmeal Cereal

(6 servings)

  • 1 and 1/2 cups quick oats
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine - melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • warm milk to serve
  • fresh fruit for topping - optional
  • brown sugar - optional
Combine the first 8 ingredients and mix well. Spread evenly in a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes or until the edges get golden brown.

Immediately spoon into bowls, add milk. Top with fruit and brown sugar, if desired.

My old woman used to make this a couple times a year. Now, it's something I make that's NOT in the microwave. I like it, but who the heck am I, right? She called it Amish Oatmeal. She was from Amish country in Pennsylvania.



A granola-type homemade breakfast cereal that's best served hot with warm milk, brown sugar and fresh fruit.
