Cinnamon Grits

(4 servings)

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups low-fat or nonfat milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup coarse ground cornmeal
  • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
I love grits! Normally, I prefer them savory with butter and pepper and an over-easy egg on top. But this sweet version is really great for a change of pace. It has just the right amount of cinnamon and the honey provides the perfect amount of sweetness. I found that a little more butter makes it even better, so I served each portion with a pat of butter on top - gently melting as you take that first delicious spoonful. You can use this same recipe for quick grits or instant grits from a packet. Just adjust the amount of liquid according to the package directions. (This recipe was submitted in 2010. It was tested and photographed in September 2015.)

How To Make Cinnamon Grits

In large saucepan over high hear, bring the water, milk and salt to a boil. Slowly stir in the grits. When the mixture starts to boil again, immediately reduce the heat to low and cover the pan.

Simmer for about 25 minutes - stirring every 5 to 10 minutes.

Once desired consistency is reached, stir in the honey, butter and cinnamon.

Serve warm.

Note From Recipe Submitter:

This is my version of some grits I got at a small restaurant in southern Georgia. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the restaurant. But I do remember the taste of those grits and this is pretty close. It goes great as a side with waffles or pancakes.

You can also turn this recipe into Cinnamon Apple Grits simply by adding 1 small apple (peeled, cored and diced) in with final ingredients. Enjoy!
