You can't review Fat City Cafe without mentioning Multnomah Village. This is a SW gem of a neighborhood where unique shops line the main street. If you come on a weekend, there will be a wait to get seated, but it's worth it.

I've always loved pork-chops and eggs and Fat City Cafe has the best. Make sure to get a side of their country gravy to top this meal off.

The husband/wife owners are very friendly. One or both will most likely be there to cook and or serve your meal.

Their coffee is just OK, probably just the way their many regulars like it.

The charm wears off in 5 minutes, but you'll be stuck here for a long time. Most memorable thing is the 'biscuit', which is more like a whole wheat scone. Flavorless and dry, if chalk came in whole wheat varieties, it would explain the taste. I'm not sure how they achieve it, but didn't think to ask.

They serve neither pancakes nor waffles. This makes them heretics. Since they know they are all going to burn in the eternal hellfire, they will not try very hard to make you happy.

This place has good prices. And I wish I could just review one item - it would get five stars - THE CINNAMON ROLL. I was having a craving on Mother's Day for a rich, ooey gooey fat one (no comments you pervs) and hubby hopped on the Internet for a poke around town for cinnamon goodness. Found Fat City and we were off by 6:30 a.m., it's opening time. There were already several peops there at 6:50 and it filled up quickly. You can get the cinnamon roll instead of toast with any breakfast for just $1.25 extra, and it comes out first - THE MOST LUSCIOUS, YEASTY, CINNAMON-Y ROLL I'VE EVER HAD. Fluffy, just the right amount of glaze, buttery, crunchy in spots on the outside, totally fresh, 3 inches tall. I could go on for an hour about this roll. I will come back for this ONE item. The rest of it (pork chops, hash browns & eggs) I will not repeat. The eggs were all wrong, one yolk was broken and hard and the other one was almost hard. They were obviously cheap eggs as the yolks were so pale as to be lemon juice color. The pork chops were pre-cooked and then re-heated on the flattop, I'm pretty sure, and tasted of old chop, although they were the right kind - thin and bone-in with the right ratio of fat to lean. It could have been a stellar pork moment, but not. I ate two bites and left the entire rest of two whole chops. No doggie bag, please. The hash browns were okay - something tells me they are the kind in the plastic jug with preservatives they shake up and then pour out onto the grill. Some weird taste that wasn't potato. But they were crisp and hot, two good things, and the gravy that came on the side with my meal was quite good, although from a mix - but it had nice chunks of meat in there, probably pork. As it cooled, it became watery, a sure sign of a gravy mix. Our waitress was having a bad morning and obviously not focused and her tip represented that lack - forgot to refill our coffees even when the place was near empty, forgot hubby's biscuit (which was VERY GOOD by the way), and then forgot his biscuit a second time. Still, she was very nice and friendly, so who cares? The place is a visual treat with license plates of all makes & various locales. Check out the porcelain doggie above your head. Cute. Hubby liked his blueberry pancakes but I thought they were extremely tough and again, from a mix, but I can't be sure. he loved them.

One thing I must stress, they use REAL butter here. That alone deserves a star. So to sum up: FIVE STAR CINNAMON ROLLS, make that TEN STARS - the best I've EVER HAD in my entire life. The rest? You can have it.
