I love Zell's and always take out-of-towners there. They always love the food. I am sorry to see there are bad reviews...hard to believe because the food and service are consistent. I love the avocado-bacon omelette with cilantro lime sauce. yum! and the german pancakes are to die for. I don't drink coffee so cannot comment on the quality but I do notice my friends getting plenty of refills.

Was in Portland for Father's day and needed to find a good breakfast place ( was visting from Seattle ). I found this restaurant on this site and decided to try it out. It was a quick drive from the Mariott on the riverfront. When we got there I loved the sign in process - you place yourself on the wait list and they call you when ready. It was not too busy when we got there, maybe a 15 -20 min wait.. but the kids drew all over the sidewalk with the sidewalk chalk and we drank the provided coffee.
Once we got in, the food was excellent and the cost was right.
Great place - I'll be going here every time I vist Portland from now on.

Delicious food and friendly staff, not to mention fast service even on a crowded Saturday morning. My fruit waffle had to have at least half a pint of raspberries, and my friend's Eggs Benedict were, she says, the best she's ever had. We will absolutely be going back and this is on my list of places to take my family, as well.

Great takes on some NW standards like the Baked Salmon Benedict or the Dutch Apple pancake. Also a place to see and be seen during the week.

my husband and i were sad to read bad reviews about our favorite breakfast joint. we've eaten there for years and it's only improved over time. the eggs benedict is to DIE for making it hard to try anything else even though they offer numerous delicious specials.(try the german pancakes!!) the waitstaff is sooo friendly and FAST!!! my coffee cup was refilled so many times i had to cover my cup with a napkin so i wouldnt drink anymore. the place is hopping but the waitstaff always makes time to chat and offer suggestions whether your a regular or a first timer. WE LOVE ZELLS!!!

What a mill! We were seated by a not too friendly hostess, hurried by a not too friendly waitress once we ordered our food. 1 refill on coffee, folks, cause then we couldn't "catch the eye" of anyone. We tried to sit and chat after a rather hurried meal and they started CLEARING OUR TABLE and being rude.....message taken......we will NEVER go back!

atmosphere is like stepping into a run down pharmacy in kansas..
who likes that?
food is very average.
you call those scones? shame.
service is like the kind you get at a cut rate insurance seminar. bland, boring, with no smiles.
coffee is average and so is this entire place.
it is also next to the dive bar capital of portland and does not help it's existance.
no parking either
2 thumbs down and if I had 3 thumbs I would probably tip that one down too.

Like most good breakfast places, Zell's is packed on the weekends. However, the line moved fast, and the waiting area was fairly comfortable. We ended up sitting at the counter, and had the sweetest waitress. My companion's order was entered incorrectly, and he received a replacement quickly. His order was comped. The food was great!
