Dark and mellow? Dank and mildewed -- much
more accurate description. My guess is the
only way this "coffeeshop" stays in business
is due to its proximity to the university's inexhaustible supply of naive freshmen
diners with more money than taste. One may only
assume that by the senior year, those students
will have learned to go elsewhere and get some
decent food for their bucks.

Some traditions lumber on in spite of their
true mediocrity, and nowhere has this been more the case in Chapel Hill than at Carolina Coffeshop. I remember it from the good old days,
and the more recent not so good days. Since the 1980s/1990s, this "tradition" has lumbered on like a drunk dinosaur under poor management, serving up heaping helpings of overpriced mediocre food. Oh, yeah, with of course the tradition. Well, that and a buck
will get ya a cup o' joe somewhere else minus
that "tradition." I don't know about you, but I
want a good breakfast, regardless of how quaint
or traditional the joint is.

This dark and mellow setting has welcomed UNC students, family and visitors since 1922. Hearty breakfasts daily except Mondays.
