I motored to Fresno from Arizona in March of 2009 to attend the 50th Annual Fresno Autorama. Beforehand, I checked out local restaurants on chowhound.com. This jewel was mentioned often, highly rated, and rightly so.

The interior is as described in a previous post: very homey, unpretentious, and clean. The waitress was every waitress that you ever loved for her warm reception and attentiveness.

Sitting at the horseshoe-shaped counter was a rare treat.

The chicken pies are stuffed with all white meat and the sauce is like a savory custard. The crust varies from crispy to almost creamy. In order to study the variations of crust structure and texture, and consistency in the quantities of chicken pieces, I ate two pies.

The two baking powder biscuits that come with each pie would normally be the star of any meal, but in comparison to the vaunted pies, they were only valued supporting players.

Their mounded dish of beyond-excellent rice pudding could easily feed three.

I loved the experience and if there is a 2010 Fresno Autorama, I will return to the Chicken Pie Shop and roam their menu. I'll sit at the horseshoe-shaped counter on a tufted green naugahyde stool and be glad that professional waitresses and quality homemade food still exist. Even if you have to drive to Fresno to find it.

You MUST get the biscuits and gravy...For the chicken pie shop actually turns out the best biscuits in Fresno. They are golden on top, creamy on the sides and angora-bunny fluffy, to say nothing of the fact that you can actually watch them getting rolled out and cut. They even offer an omellette stuffed with their notorious chicken pie filling, but I have never sampled it.

We really miss their chicken pot pies and rice Pudding. We haven't found anything as special as their chicken pot pies...When we come to Fresno we make a point to eat at the chicken Pie Shop. Can't being to tell you how long we've eaten there. We've only eaten breakfast there a few times; but lunch/dinner quite often.

If you want to feel like you should be in a scene of "Pulp Fiction", welcome to the Chicken Pie Shop. They make Chicken Pies daily and have the best mini fruit or cream pies. But the breakfast is so good. You can get Huge omlettes, Biscuits and gravy, and a waitress that you are sure to want to call "Flo" (kiss my grits).

The best draw is the olive green vinyl booths, the GIANT PLASTIC Chicken and Rooster ART on the walls, and the HUGE horseshoe shaped counter that you can seat 40 little old men at with no problem.

You gotta come and try it!(wink)
