Chocolate Cheerios

From General Mills
Reviewed by Mr Breakfast on 1/27/2010

I wanted to love Chocolate Cheerios. A quick look at the box and it seems like a no-brainer. Chocolate plus Cheerios... of course... what took them so long? The cereal is even pretty to look at with it's two tone cereal pieces of tan and brown. Someday, I'd like to do my kitchen cabinets in those colors. But you know what WON'T be going in the kitchen cabinets of my future... I'm sad to report... Chocolate Cheerios.

Chocolate Cheerios is short on chocolate. It's strange. The milk left over at the bottom of the bowl is very chocolatey... wonderfully chocolatey. I'd buy it in a bottle. Unfortunately, the gustatory trip to get to the end of a bowl is not a very fun experience.

The whole grain corn and oat flavors of the cereal pieces seem to compete with the chocolate rather than work with it. The loser of the competition is the chocolate. The result is a sweet, burnt, corny oat flavor with a sad touch of chocolate.

If you've ever tried to make chocolate muffins healthier by using whole wheat flour, you'll understand the flavor here. Mixing whole grains and chocolate is tricky business. If the flavor of your flour overpowers your chocolate, your muffins are duds.

This cereal is a dud. In it's current incarnation, this combination of chocolate and Cheerios simply does not work.

Wow. I don't know if anyone still reads these posts but it's almost 10 years to the day of the original review/post and I'm trying Chocolate Cheerios for the first time (January 2020). I gotta say... I am underwhelmed. It taste like regular Cheerios (which is not a bad thing) with just a very very slight hint of sugar. Not really a chocolate taste at all. It does 'make' chocolate milk but guess what? It tastes like white milk. Very bland. Not worth the few extra calories. Going back to my favorite of Special K with real chocolate milk added.

Chocolate Cheerios was disappointing with hardly any chocolate on the oats at all - lame taste.

It doesn't give you a true chocolate taste, if you are a chocoholic. But if you just like chocolate, are not crazy for it, it's good. Yes, I am a chocoholic so to me it is brown cereal, not chocolate, but it is good just the same. If you want it more chocolatey, sprinkle unsweetened cocoa powder on it. You have to understand that this cereal was made for the general public, not for chocoholics.

One of it's ingredient is 'color added', but it isn't even special of rathe rit is natural coloring, or artificial coloring tells me it must be a harmful artificial coloring, and that is why they didn't print it explicitly on their ingredients list. I am returning my huge box today.

Haven't tried it in milk yet, but so far this is the best new Cheerios since honey nut. I can taste the chocolate perfectly well and I like that it's not overpoweringly chocolate but rather competes with a honey/syrup taste for the dominant flavor. An excellent mix of flavors, this is going to be my new snack food.

Ssssssso wonderful! This is by far one of my top favourite cereals. I wasn't expecting it to be strong enough to turn the milk chocolatey, but when it did I thought it was delicious. Better than a Yoohoo. And less calories to boot.

THIS STUFF IS AWESOME.

My only complaint is that "Cheerios" arent really supposed to be corn, at least IMO.

I think they taste just like Cocoa Puffs. I think Mr Breaksfast is out of his mind. THEY'RE GRRRRREAT!

Cheerios are supposed to be more than just circles. They're supposed to be made from oats! Oats are a lowly fifth place on the ingredient list here! Nothing wrong with corn or wheat, but I buy Cheerios for the oats and I suspect that many others do as well. Kind of the point of all those commercials years ago hyping the, you guessed it, OATS! I guess from now on we have to keep checking the labels on all the Cheerios products, even the original, to make sure General Mills hasn't tried another bait and switch. Worst Cereal Ever.
